# GPA and transcripts: what to put on an internship application

## 3.48 when rounding; not 3.50 for eligibility

Fictional transcript: cumulative GPA 3.476 out of 4.0; major GPA 3.82. One application requests two decimal places. Another sets an exact 3.50 cumulative minimum. Those are different instructions.

### Report the number the field asks for

| Application asks for | What this student reports |
| --- | --- |
| Cumulative GPA, two decimal places | 3.48 under ordinary rounding, unless the instructions specify otherwise |
| Whether cumulative GPA is at least 3.50 | No: the underlying 3.476 is below 3.50 |
| Major GPA | 3.82, identified as major GPA |
| Current-school GPA before any grades exist | An available/not-yet-established option, or a clarification from support; not an invented number |

## Your turn

Your university uses a different grading scale, but the application forces a 4.0-scale number. What should you ask?

## For your own application

Check the GPA definition, scale and institution against your transcript before submitting. Treat any unresolved conversion or required missing value as a question to resolve, not a number to guess.
