Before you apply
Program evidence and scope
The official program is described as 10–14 weeks, beginning in mid-to-late May and ending in August. It promises project work, exposure to other business areas, networking and coaching. Candidates must remain students at an accredited four-year college or university during the internship and pursue a bachelor's, master's or doctoral program related to the role. [4]
Pay & location
Compensation, location and offer comparisons
Before comparing offers, obtain the reporting location, required attendance, scheduled hours, pay basis, program dates and any relocation terms. A group headquartered in Madison may recruit for other teams and locations; headquarters is not a substitute for the job's location. Ask whether a remote label permits work from your intended state. A hybrid assignment also requires a realistic commute and housing plan, not merely a willingness to visit occasionally.

How to build an application that matches the function
For analytical work, lead with a decision you improved using evidence and explain the reconciliation or validation. For engineering, lead with a working system, its tests and a design trade-off. For service-oriented work, demonstrate accuracy and ownership in a situation involving a real person's problem. These are recommended evidence choices, not confirmed American Family application requirements.

Keep the resume focused on the intended team. Listing every insurance-related interest can make the application less clear. A short accompanying explanation should connect one relevant experience to the work described in the actual requisition. Do not use private customer information or proprietary data in a portfolio. An anonymized example with transparent assumptions can still show disciplined reasoning.
Identify the employer before evaluating the opportunity
This distinction affects what the work teaches. A corporate analytical assignment, a software project and work for a local agency can all involve insurance, but they are not equivalent employment structures. Ask who employs and supervises you, how compensation works and whether the position is part of the corporate student program. A recognizable logo does not answer those questions.
The business lens a student should bring
The company's customer-facing site presents auto, home, life and business insurance. Those product categories provide a starting map, not evidence that a specific internship touches each one. The group and individual operating-company footprints should also not be confused; a broad group presence does not establish that every brand sells every product in every location. [1], [3]
For preparation, distinguish the customer's purchase, the insurer's assessment of risk, the administration of a policy and the handling of a claim. A technology or analytics project is easier to understand when you can identify which of those processes it supports. Ask what decision your team's data helps someone make. That question is more useful than assuming insurance work is either exclusively sales or exclusively actuarial modeling.
Recent graduates: a different entry route
American Family's early-careers page separately identifies a Rotational Development Program for recent college graduates. It is described as providing varied experience, mentoring and business skills. That is a different route from the student internship and should not be counted as an undergraduate summer vacancy. [5]
Technology and business systems: evidence of a student route
For a technology application, prepare a project that connects a user need to implementation and testing. Be able to explain data handling, failure cases and the reason for a design decision. A business-information-systems candidate can demonstrate similar value through a reconciled reporting workflow or a documented process improvement. Ask whether the student will work on production systems, internal tools or a separate project, and what review is required before changes reach users.
Customer-facing and agency work: do not collapse the categories
The careers navigation treats becoming an agency owner as a separate path from jobs and early careers. That separation is enough to require caution when a student encounters an agency-branded opportunity. It does not establish the terms of any particular agency internship. [2], [5]
Older intern accounts and what they cannot prove
Use those accounts to generate preparation questions, not to predict an offer. Practice explaining a disagreement, a mistake you corrected and a project you completed under constraints. Make your contribution clear. When an answer includes a numerical result, explain how it was measured and whether other factors could have contributed. That level of precision transfers across insurance functions without relying on an old interview question bank.
Separate risk analysis from insurance selling
Prepare a fictional loss or service dataset and explain what one record represents. Compare frequency, severity or process delays without treating them as interchangeable outcomes. State the limitations and the control needed before using the result. Read the employing brand, function and compensation model before assuming that a role offers corporate analytical experience.
Hypothetical preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a verified internship assignment.
Interview evidence: two recent accounts, different formats
Candidate report · 2026-09-04
A Glassdoor software-intern account posted January 18, 2026 described a Boston process consisting of a recruiter screen and a behavioral manager interview. A March 2025 post about a December 2024 Madison interview described a recruiter screen followed by a technical and behavioral interview, including a coding problem. The page contained only two ratings for this role. These are useful individual accounts, not a statistically reliable hiring standard. [6]
Analytical insurance work: what to investigate
A suitable preparation exercise uses a hypothetical set of policies or claims to distinguish a change in volume from a change in average cost. State what the data includes, which period it covers and what is missing. Avoid presenting a small sample as a reliable estimate of a whole portfolio. An interviewer can learn more from your treatment of incomplete data than from an elaborate model whose assumptions are hidden. Ask whether the prospective assignment involves reporting, forecasting, pricing support or another defined task.
Research context
American Family's official company information describes an insurance group based in Madison, Wisconsin. Its careers site names multiple operating companies, including Homesite, Main Street America and CONNECT, and separates corporate employment from becoming an agency owner. A student should therefore record the exact employing company and team rather than treating every appearance of “American Family” as the same job. [1], [2]
