Application choices
Before you apply
Preparation by function
Interview preparation should start with one project you can defend in detail. Be ready to explain the initial specification, what you personally owned, the first failure, the measurement or data used to isolate the problem, the trade-off in the final design, and what you would change with another week. For a hardware or process role, expect questions that test whether you understand measurement error and physical constraints. For software, explain interfaces, tests, observability and failure handling. For business roles, explain the operating mechanism behind the number you modeled.
Work, teams and company background

Company brief and operating context
Amkor's value comes from turning bare or partially processed semiconductor devices into manufacturable, testable packages and systems. Advanced packaging increasingly affects electrical performance, thermal behavior, signal integrity, power delivery, form factor and system integration. Students should therefore treat packaging as a technical discipline, not an administrative step after chip design.
For students, the useful question is not whether the company is 'in semiconductors.' It is where the company sits in the value chain, what physical or software object the team owns, and what evidence a junior candidate can bring to that layer. The division map below is an application framework, not a promise that every function is hiring in every cycle.
Candidate fit, offer diligence and decision questions
Evaluate the internship on project ownership, manager access, technical learning, location burden, conversion path and compensation rather than employer name alone. For equipment and manufacturing employers, on-site work may be the source of learning rather than a drawback: the lab, cleanroom, factory or test floor may contain the actual problem. Conversely, relocation without housing support can materially change effective compensation. Build a simple after-tax and housing budget if the offer requires a move.
A strong offer should make the work legible. You should know the team, likely project class, manager or mentor structure, physical location, schedule, pay basis and whether the work is expected to continue after the internship. If the recruiter cannot answer those questions before acceptance, treat that uncertainty as part of the offer rather than assuming the best-case version.
Questions worth asking a recruiter or former intern
- Which team and product, process or system would own the intern?
- What deliverable did the previous intern leave behind, and was it used after the program?
- How often does the intern meet the direct manager or technical mentor?
- Which lab, factory, cleanroom, codebase, instruments or production data will be available?
- Does the stated pay exclude or include housing, relocation, transport or overtime treatment?
- Is conversion to another internship or full-time role an explicit program path or simply possible?
- What is the most common reason a technically qualified intern struggles on this team?
Advanced Packaging / Product Engineering
A strong applicant should understand package architectures, interconnects, materials and manufacturing constraints. A project on flip-chip, substrates, thermal analysis or package signal integrity can show how geometry and materials change electrical and thermal outcomes.
For this role family, prepare one evidence item with a defined input, method, output and error check. State what you personally did and what depended on teammates, equipment or existing code. The goal is to make your reasoning auditable. If the project has no measured result, add a test, benchmark, comparison or post-mortem before using it as the lead application example.
Process / Manufacturing
Packaging lines generate large volumes of process data. Candidates should practice root-cause analysis, control-chart interpretation, DOE and clear documentation of changes. A recommendation should quantify defect, yield, cycle-time or cost impact.
Finance / Accounting
Historical example · 2026-09-04
Historical Tempe internships included finance and accounting. Strong candidates should connect cost accounting, capex, depreciation, utilization and inventory to the economics of a capital-intensive packaging operation.
Business Flow / Supply Chain
Historical example · 2026-09-04
Historical Business Flow Analyst internships suggest opportunities around how materials and information move through the organization. Build a process map with bottlenecks, handoffs and measurable service levels rather than a generic dashboard.
Trace a failure through the manufacturing record
Create a fictional package or test record with a missing process entry. Explain what can still be concluded and what must be investigated before the unit is accepted. For an operations application, add a capacity consequence to the same case. Distinguish engineering disposition from your analytical recommendation and preserve the assumptions behind both.
Hypothetical preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a verified internship assignment.
Interview preparation
Do not memorize a generic company description. Pick one product or process area relevant to the team and form a point of view about the engineering or operating problem it solves. Then prepare questions that reveal the internship's actual quality: What deliverable is expected by the end? Who reviews the work weekly? What lab, fab, codebase or data access will the intern receive? How is a project scoped when equipment or customer dependencies slip? What happened to last year's intern project? These questions produce more decision-useful information than asking whether the culture is 'collaborative.'
Research context
Amkor Technology is a large outsourced semiconductor packaging and test company and describes itself as the largest U.S.-headquartered OSAT. Its footprint and technical work make it a natural internship target for package engineering, process and manufacturing, product engineering, supply chain, finance and operations.
