Applying, eligibility and interviews
FedEx's documented Summer 2026 marketing process included hiring-manager phone screens, a manager panel and virtual behavioral interviews. Its guidance recommended STAR answers supported by metrics or data. That cycle is closed, but it gives marketing applicants a concrete preparation starting point; it does not establish the interview process for audit, engineering or technology. [F23] For those functions, follow the direct posting and recruiter instructions.
More details
Preparation should follow the function. Audit candidates should practice a risk/control case and a difficult stakeholder conversation. IE candidates should prepare a measured process change and be ready to discuss working with frontline operators. Aircraft candidates should expect technical and safety depth. Technology applicants should defend architecture, data and failure modes. Commercial candidates should explain a customer problem and operating economics.
Questions worth asking:
• Which legal employer appears on the offer, and which FedEx business owns the internship?
• Is the worksite a corporate office, station, hub, airport, warehouse, retail center or customer location?
• What are the normal hours and is any early, late, overnight or peak-operation observation required?
• What is the primary summer deliverable and who uses it after the term?
• How much of an operations role is scheduled coverage versus project work?
• What data, systems, equipment and facility access will be available on day one?
• If the role is in FedEx Supply Chain, what happens to the internship if the CMA CGM transaction closes before or during the term?
• What determines a return offer, and is it for the same legal employer, business and location?

The business after the FedEx freight spin-off
FedEx Corporation is the public parent. Its current company page lists $85.9 billion of FY26 annual revenue, more than 450,000 team members, nearly 18 million average daily shipments, 700 aircraft, more than 175,000 motorized vehicles and operations across more than 220 countries and territories. Federal Express Corporation is the principal integrated express operating company and accounts for most of that activity. FedEx lists Federal Express at $82.3 billion of FY26 annual revenue. [F6]
Historical example · 2026-09-05
The reporting structure changed on June 1, 2026. FedEx’s FY26 Form 10-K says the company now has two reportable segments, Express U.S. Domestic and Express International, collectively called Federal Express. FedEx Logistics moved into Express International reporting. Older reports that treat FedEx Express, FedEx Ground and FedEx Services as separate current operating companies need to be read historically: FedEx Ground Package System and FedEx Corporate Services had already been merged into Federal Express Corporation in 2024 as the company built one integrated air-ground network. [F7]
That integration changes the problem set for interns. A shipment can move through pickup, a local station, ground linehaul, a hub, aircraft, customs and final delivery depending on service level and geography. Network choices trade off speed, density, capacity, fuel, labor, equipment, reliability and customer commitments. A local facility decision can shift volume or cost elsewhere in the system. Candidates in engineering, analytics, finance or technology should be able to explain the operating consequence of their work, not only the tool they used. [F7, F12-F14]
FedEx Freight is no longer part of FedEx Corporation
This is the most important boundary in the report. FedEx completed the spin-off of FedEx Freight Holding Company on June 1, 2026. FedEx Freight began trading independently on the NYSE as FDXF; FedEx remains FDX. FedEx retained a 19.9% financial stake to dispose of over time, but the operating company is independent and its results are no longer consolidated by FedEx. [F8]
Other current businesses and changing boundaries
FedEx Office remains a distinct customer-facing and business-services organization headquartered in Plano, with more than 2,000 locations. Store work centers on printing, packing, shipping and retail service; corporate Office roles can involve product, technology, marketing, finance or operations. A retail associate role is regular retail employment unless the posting explicitly calls it an internship. [F6, F15]
FedEx Dataworks is a separate named company on the current careers system and uses network data to build digital products, operating tools and supply-chain insights. The current company page says the group has more than 200 team members. For a student, the useful distinction is that Dataworks problems start with data generated by the transportation network but can end in a software, analytics or customer product. [F6, F15]
FedEx Supply Chain is more complicated. The current FedEx company page still describes it as a direct subsidiary of Federal Express Corporation, providing warehousing, distribution, fulfillment, returns, recycling and transportation management. On July 1, however, FedEx agreed to sell the business to CMA CGM for $1.4 billion, with closing expected in 2026 subject to approvals. Current FedEx careers results still show FedEx Supply Chain jobs. Until the transaction closes, a student should preserve the legal employer and offer terms exactly; after closing, the business will no longer be a FedEx subsidiary. [F6, F10, F15]
Contractors are another real boundary. FedEx’s current contracting site says independent service-provider companies conduct pickup, delivery and transportation work using their own employees. Those businesses control hiring, compensation, schedules and assignments. A FedEx-branded delivery van or uniform therefore does not prove FedEx employment. Contractor jobs cannot establish FedEx intern pay, benefits or conversion policy. [F11]
Where the work happens
Warehouse, logistics and customs work
FedEx Logistics and FedEx Supply Chain create different site conditions. Logistics work can sit around customs, global forwarding, trade data, warehouse operations and international customer flows. Supply Chain work can take place in distribution and fulfillment facilities with inventory, labor, equipment, returns and customer-specific service levels. Because Supply Chain is under an agreed sale, the ownership and employer on any future internship require a fresh check. [F6, F10, F15]
What the work looks like by function
Industrial engineering, operations and network planning
Who uses it: field operations, engineering managers, station or hub leaders, network planners and finance or capital teams.
What strong evidence looks like: a project where the candidate can state the process, baseline volume or service level, bottleneck, data, model, implementation constraint and measured result. Operations research, statistics, Excel, SQL, Power BI, simulation, optimization, process mapping or Lean methods can be useful depending on the role. A dashboard without a decision is weak; a process recommendation that cannot work during the real sort or shift is also weak.
Air operations and aircraft engineering
Current Federal Express engineering work spans aircraft and surface networks. The Miami role uses flight schedules, routings, capacity and seasonal contingencies. The Memphis aircraft role works on aircraft, engines and components under safety, reliability and regulatory constraints. [F12, F14]
Who uses it: air-network planners, flight operations, engineering, maintenance and operating leadership.
Suggested preparation: for network work, build an optimization or capacity example with service and disruption trade-offs. For aircraft engineering, prepare a technical project that shows requirements, failure modes, reliability, documentation, test evidence and safety judgment. Do not claim pilot or mechanic qualifications from general engineering coursework.
Audit, finance and controls
Who uses it: Internal Audit, business leaders, control owners and senior/executive management.
Best evidence: a control or process analysis where you identified the risk, tested evidence, separated exception from root cause, quantified exposure where possible and proposed a practical action. Accounting and finance students should be ready to discuss controls and operating processes; information-systems students should be able to discuss access, data, systems or technology risk without turning the interview into a generic cybersecurity pitch.
Technology, data and Dataworks
The Student Programs page explicitly includes IT among summer business areas. FedEx Dataworks provides the current organizational context: it turns network data into digital products and operating or supply-chain decisions. FedEx’s network generates shipment events, routing information, customer interactions and tracking data at enormous scale. [F1, F6]
Observed company work should not be converted into an internship promise. A strong student application should nevertheless show production thinking: data quality, interfaces, latency, reliability, security, testing, deployment and who uses the result. A model that predicts an event is less persuasive than one tied to a routing, capacity, visibility, fraud or customer decision.
Logistics, forwarding and customs
FedEx Logistics is the current FedEx business for global forwarding, customs brokerage and trade consulting. It is now associated with Express International reporting, and the current careers system uses FedEx Logistics as a distinct company label on jobs. [F6-F7, F15]
Suggested preparation: an international-logistics example should identify origin/destination, mode, customs or trade requirement, service commitment, cost and exception process. Do not substitute parcel-sort experience for customs knowledge or assume a domestic Federal Express policy applies to an international legal entity.
Supply Chain, warehousing and fulfillment
FedEx Supply Chain remains visible in the FedEx careers system while the CMA CGM sale is pending. Its current business covers warehousing, distribution, fulfillment, returns, recycling and transportation management. [F6, F10, F15]
Suggested preparation: show inventory or capacity analysis, warehouse process mapping, labor or slotting logic, service-level measurement, quality and a customer implementation. But check the transaction state before applying or accepting. The future employer, benefits and conversion path may change after closing.
Commercial, product and FedEx Office
Best evidence: connect customer discovery to the service that must be delivered. A commercial recommendation should show customer need, shipment or product characteristics, price or economics, network feasibility and the outcome. For FedEx Office, understand the retail and print-production environment; for Federal Express, understand transportation commitments. They should not be presented as one identical sales internship.
Who should prioritize FedEx
FedEx is a strong target for students who want analytics, engineering, finance, audit, technology or commercial work connected to a real transportation system. It is especially distinctive for industrial engineering, operations research, aviation and aircraft engineering, supply-chain/logistics, customs, network finance and enterprise data candidates who can connect technical work to service, safety, capacity, cost or customer outcomes.
Treat it as a conditional fit if the logo attracts you but you have not decided on the environment. A Memphis hybrid audit seat, a Federal Express hub, a FedEx Logistics customs role, a Dataworks product team and a FedEx Office center are materially different jobs. FedEx Supply Chain adds transaction uncertainty until its sale closes.
It is a weaker fit if you require guaranteed remote work, one national deadline, one uniform culture or predictable weekday hours across every role. It is also a weak fit if you are unwilling to verify the legal employer or if you treat FedEx Freight as a current FedEx Corporation division after the June spin-off.
Application sequence:
1. Choose the business and work environment first.
2. Verify the legal employer and current ownership before tailoring.
3. Classify the role: internship, co-op, retail/frontline, contractor, professional aviation or full-time graduate.
5. Build two examples around the operating or control problem the team actually handles.
7. Prepare for the function rather than a generic “FedEx interview.”
8. Ask about sponsor, deliverable, worksite/shift, organizational change and return-offer ownership.
9. Compare the actual employer, business, site and project rather than the FedEx brand alone.
