Applying & interviews

Applying and interviews

Official process:

For corporate business roles, prepare for the job rather than a generic behavioral interview. Finance: forecast drivers, variance analysis, accounting basics and a business case. Audit: controls, risk, evidence and how you communicate a finding. Merchandising: category economics, assortment, pricing, inventory and a member/customer recommendation. Supply chain: process, capacity, safety, service and root-cause analysis. Store leadership: staffing, coaching, customer situations and operating metrics. Technology: coding, debugging, systems or data depth plus behavioral examples.

Application choices

What to do before you apply

Choose one route and build evidence for it.

Finance/AFDP: build a one-page driver-based forecast or investment case tied to a retail business.

Audit: map a process, identify risks and controls, and write a concise finding with an action plan.

Merchandising: build a category recommendation using price, assortment, margin, inventory and customer/member evidence.

Technology: bring one technically deep project and be able to debug or explain it at component level.

Supply chain: quantify a process problem with cycle time, capacity, service, defects, labor or cost.

Store/club leadership: prepare examples of coaching, conflict, staffing, safety and measurable execution.

Pay & location

Pay, housing, location and offer terms

Do not annualize the hourly ranges into a “Walmart intern salary.” The employer publishes broad hourly ranges, and the actual rate can depend on role and location. Compare offers using the stated hourly or monthly basis, expected paid weeks/hours, housing/relocation value, location costs, and whether the program feeds a defined full-time route.

The business: why the internships are so different

Walmart’s 2026 Form 10-K describes three reportable segments: Walmart U.S., Walmart International and Sam’s Club U.S. Walmart U.S. combines stores with eCommerce, pickup and delivery, Walmart+, marketplace sellers, advertising, fulfillment services and supplier analytics. Sam’s Club is a membership warehouse business with its own clubs, digital channels, private brand, advertising and supplier-insight products. The same filing reports about $99.6 billion of Walmart U.S. eCommerce sales in fiscal 2026. That mix explains why an “internship at a retailer” can look like finance, software, merchandising, logistics, advertising, data or field operations rather than one generic consumer role.

For a student, the practical distinction is who uses your work. A merchant needs an assortment or pricing decision. A finance partner needs a forecast, variance explanation or investment case. A product or engineering team needs a functioning system or measured product outcome. A supply-chain leader needs better flow, capacity, safety, labor productivity or service. A store or club leader needs reliable execution through people and operating routines. The company is the same; the unit of work is not.

What interns do, by route

Finance, accounting and audit

Walmart finance internships focus on operating-company decisions rather than investing. Strong candidates can move a business driver—volume, price, mix, labor, inventory, fulfillment cost or capital spending—through a model and explain the revenue, margin and cash implications.

Merchandising and category work

Merchandising is the commercial engine that decides what to sell and how the economics work. Walmart’s current Corporate Merchandising career page describes a data-driven function spanning stores and online channels. In practice, the questions are assortment, pricing, promotion, vendor performance, demand, margin, inventory and customer or member response. That is different from marketing, which is primarily about audience, message, channel and demand generation.

A merchandising application should show category judgment rather than a generic brand deck: estimate demand, compare competitors, diagnose price and assortment, discuss margin and inventory trade-offs and make a recommendation.

Sam’s Club deserves its own framing. It is a membership business, so member retention, renewal, basket economics and the Member’s Mark private brand shape commercial decisions differently from Walmart U.S. The 2026 10-K says membership income is a significant component of Sam’s Club U.S. operating income. A candidate who can discuss member value and category economics has a more specific story than someone who simply says they like retail.

Global tech, product, data and security

For an intern, the important question is which operational system sits behind the title. A product role for merchant inventory tools is closer to merchandising and store execution than to a consumer social app. A last-mile product role touches routing, delivery capacity and service levels. A payments product touches authorization, fraud and checkout reliability. Software and data candidates should therefore explain scale and failure modes, not just list languages.

Preparation should remain technical and role-specific. Software candidates should be able to discuss one system end to end: architecture, APIs, data model, testing, debugging, deployment and reliability. Data candidates should explain data quality, experimental or modeling choices, evaluation and how the result changes a business decision. Product candidates should bring a one-page product case that names the user, pain point, metric, trade-offs and launch plan. Security candidates should be able to connect a threat to a control and explain residual risk.

Candidate report · 2026-09-05
Three Walmart Global Tech Software Engineer (Internship) accounts from March and August 2026 described online assessment, coding/debugging or project discussion, and behavioral questions in different combinations. Prepare to solve problems and explain your own code, not just rehearse behavioral stories. These are self-reported examples, not a promised sequence; the role-filtered accounts were inspected September 5, 2026.

Supply chain, transportation and facility operations

Supply chain is a physical operating network. Walmart’s current Supply Chain and Transportation careers page separates drivers, maintenance, engineering, aviation, operations, management, security/asset protection and manufacturing, and it offers an Area Manager job simulation. Unlike corporate planning, many roles happen where freight moves and where labor, equipment, safety, throughput and service are visible in real time.

The work can involve flow, capacity, labor planning, automation, routing, inventory accuracy, defects, dwell time, equipment reliability and service levels. A strong applicant should quantify operations. “Improved a process” is weak; “cut average cycle time 18% without raising defects” is useful. Industrial engineering, operations research, SQL/Excel analytics, process mapping and root-cause analysis can all matter depending on the role.

Store and club operations

Store and club work must be kept separate from a Bentonville corporate internship. Walmart’s current Stores and Clubs page covers cashier/front end, food and grocery, general merchandise, digital pickup/delivery, retail management, pharmacy, auto services, maintenance and other field functions. Its management examples focus on running teams and daily operations. That is frontline employment context, not evidence that every store offers a structured college internship.

If you pursue a store or club leadership internship or student role when one is posted, expect the evidence standard to be leadership under operating pressure: coaching people, handling customer issues, staffing, safety, inventory execution, service and basic financial performance. Schedules can differ materially from headquarters work. The direct role should control whether the position is an internship, its hours, location, pay, travel, physical requirements and any mobility expectations.

Do not turn ordinary hourly store employment into “internship experience” in this guide. It can still be valuable prior evidence. A student who has supervised a shift, improved pickup accuracy, reduced shrink or trained associates may have strong material for a later operations internship, but the employment category remains different.

Who should prioritize Walmart

Prioritize Walmart if you want a large operating system where decisions can be tied to real customers, members, stores, suppliers, inventory and logistics. It is particularly attractive for students who can combine analysis with execution: finance students who want operating-company decisions, merchants who like category economics, engineers who want systems at retail scale, and operations students who want physical-network problems.

Think harder if your ideal summer is remote-first, boutique, highly unstructured, or disconnected from retail operations. Field and facility work can demand physical presence and non-office schedules. Corporate work can still be process-heavy because of Walmart’s size. The manager, project and conversion path matter more than the logo.

Before accepting: project, housing and conversion

Ask which Walmart or Sam’s Club team owns the project, what decision the final deliverable will support, and who reviews the work. Confirm the office or facility schedule and the exact housing/relocation terms in writing. For AFDP, ask how internship performance feeds selection for the two-year program; for other routes, ask about their own return-offer process rather than assuming the same pathway.
