Developer tools internships: build a tool someone else can use

A useful developer-tool project helps another person finish a specific task without your explanation. Build a small configuration checker, then watch someone install it and diagnose a bad file. Its error messages and failure behavior matter as much as the valid-input demo.

Write the tool’s contract in six lines

For an original practice tool named config-check, require a JSON object with two fields: port is an integer from 1 to 65535, and retries is an integer from 0 to 3. Reject missing fields, unexpected fields and values of the wrong type. These are chosen rules for the exercise, not a universal configuration format.

Define exit code 0 as valid, 1 as an invalid configuration and 2 as a file-read or command-use failure. The checker does not edit the file. A person and an automated script should be able to distinguish those outcomes without interpreting a stack trace.

Test what the happy-path example leaves out

Use a few tiny files and name the expected result before implementing the check. Integers and booleans must remain different types under this specification.

A chosen contract for a fictional local checker
Input or conditionExpected result
{"port":8080,"retries":2}Valid; exit 0
{"port":8080,"retries":4}Invalid retries; exit 1
{"port":true,"retries":2}Wrong port type; exit 1
{"port":8080}Missing retries; exit 1
File cannot be readFile-read error; exit 2
  • A useful message is: “config.json: retries must be an integer from 0 to 3; received 4.” It identifies the field, rule and observed problem.
  • A help command should show one valid example and explain the exit codes. Keep the file unchanged when validation fails.
  • Add boundary tests for retries 0 and 3, plus an unexpected field. A validator that accepts the demonstration file but ignores unknown settings can miss a misspelled option.

Use a fresh installation to find the next problem

Give a consenting classmate the installation instructions and a bad configuration without coaching. Record where they stop. Perhaps the command is not on the path, the error points to no filename or the documented example uses an old field name. Fix the observed problem and test the instructions again.

Describe the result narrowly: “A classmate completed the setup without verbal help after I corrected the installation step.” That is evidence of one successful test, not a 50% productivity improvement for all developers.

For an application, supply the installation instructions, contract, examples and tests. Explain one interface decision you changed after feedback. Ask the team how users report problems and who maintains the intern’s change after the placement; a useful tool needs a handoff, not a dependency on your laptop.

Before you apply

Eligibility
Match the language and system requirements of the actual tool. An open-source contribution is evidence, not a universal application prerequisite.
Timing
Stripe separates internship scheduling from rolling full-time and apprenticeship hiring. Use the student application route.
Location
Confirm the team’s location; a tool used remotely does not establish remote employment.
Pay
Check the posted or offered compensation. Unpaid contributions to an open-source project are not automatically an internship.
