Separate building the block from proving its behavior
NVIDIA's technical hiring reference distinguishes ASIC design from verification work. Use the responsibilities, not the employer name, to decide which application to write. An RTL project can support either search, but a verification application needs evidence about the tests and the failures they expose.
For each vacancy, record the level of the design under test, the verification method, and the expected deliverable. A block-level testbench, a system-level diagnostic, and a formal property set are not three names for the same assignment. Choose the one you can discuss with the least hand-waving.

Verify a FIFO and deliberately introduce a bug
Build a small FIFO model and a separate reference model. Write a test plan covering empty and full states, wraparound, simultaneous reads and writes, and reset behavior. Introduce one documented defect, such as an incorrect full flag, and show the exact input sequence that detects it. Then fix the defect and retain the regression. The goal is a credible debugging story, not the largest test count.
- Record the random seed or deterministic sequence needed to reproduce every failure.
- Keep expected behavior independent of the implementation rather than copying its logic into the checker.
- Explain one behavior your tests do not cover and how you would extend the plan.
Describe coverage honestly in the application
State the behaviors checked and the defect found. Avoid a bare claim of complete coverage unless you define precisely what the metric measures. A reviewer should be able to run the failing and repaired versions and see why the change matters. Prepare a short explanation of how you decide whether a failure belongs to the design, the testbench, or the specification.
- Ask whether the internship has an assigned block and a named verification owner.
- Ask whether you will create tests, debug regressions, maintain infrastructure, or combine these activities.
- Check whether the employer's co-op calendar conflicts with exams before accepting an interview slot.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Prioritize postings matching your digital logic, computer architecture, and programming background. Treat SystemVerilog or UVM requirements literally; distinguish required experience from skills the team is willing to teach.
- Timing
- AMD's regional page describes U.S. summer and co-op schedules separately. Check the duration before applying: a semester-length or longer co-op is not interchangeable with a summer internship.
- Location
- Confirm the design team's work location and whether simulator or hardware access requires attendance. Do not infer remote eligibility merely because the work uses code.
- Pay
- Compare hourly compensation across the same number of weeks and hours. For a longer co-op, include the cost of displaced coursework and any separate housing commitment.

Job titles to search
- ASIC design verification intern
- Find test planning, stimulus generation, assertions, and coverage responsibilities.
- SoC verification intern
- Look for interactions among blocks, interfaces, resets, and shared resources.
- Formal verification intern
- Look for properties, assumptions, proofs, and counterexample analysis rather than only simulation.

AMD student programs
Start with AMD's student opportunities and retain the location and placement type filters. Verification and design are different search buckets even when both mention RTL.
