Revenue rises 2.9%, but operating profit falls 26.6%
Original fictional business: annual volume is 1 million units at $20 each. Revenue is $20 million. With a 40% gross margin, gross profit is $8 million. Subtract $5 million of fixed operating expenses: operating profit is $3 million.
Now assume volume rises to 1.05 million units, price falls to $19.60 and gross margin falls to 35%. Fixed operating expenses remain $5 million. These are separate scenario assumptions, not a forecast of a real company.
- New revenue: 1.05 million × $19.60 = $20.58 million, up 2.9%.
- New gross profit: $20.58 million × 35% = $7.203 million.
- New operating profit: $7.203 million − $5 million = $2.203 million, down about 26.6%.
Find the observation that would settle the question
The research question is not simply whether customers will buy more units. It is whether the extra volume comes at a price and cost that preserve profit. In this example, volume growth does not offset the combined price and margin assumptions.
A useful note would investigate whether the price reduction is temporary, whether product mix changed and whether input costs are rising. Keep those explanations separate until the evidence supports one. Do not describe a margin decline as a pricing problem merely because the two occurred together.
Use a dated company filing or earnings release to build your own case. Put reported figures next to the source and label estimates as estimates. Write the strongest contrary evidence beside the thesis. For example: 'My margin concern would weaken if disclosed unit costs fell enough to offset the lower price.' If unit costs are not disclosed, say what proxy you used and why it is imperfect.
A short note needs a view, a calculation and a reason to change your mind
One or two pages can contain the question, the driver calculation, the evidence for and against it, and the next observation to watch. A share-price target is optional for a preparation exercise. Adding one without a valuation bridge does not make the research more complete.
Practice explaining why the business result matters for an investor. Good operating performance does not establish an attractive purchase price, and a disappointing quarter does not by itself establish that a stock is expensive. Separate the business forecast from the price paid for it.
When applying, identify the sector you studied and the work you personally performed. For a class or student-fund model, acknowledge shared work and obtain permission before distributing it. Ask the interviewer whether interns maintain estimates, investigate new questions or support a broader client process; prepare the sample for the actual assignment.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Check the research position's degree and graduation requirements; a bank-wide summer analyst page does not settle every research team's conditions.
- Timing
- JPMorgan describes sector research within its nine-week markets program. Goldman's 2027 Americas route is another place to check the research business, not proof of a specific open seat.
- Location
- Record the sector and office, and ask whether the research assignment is confirmed before accepting a broader markets role.
- Pay
- Compare the actual internship rate and term. Experienced analyst pay and an unconfirmed bonus do not describe the offer in front of you.
