Anthropic application practice

Fictional practice, not an employer interview question.

Test your judgment with this case

Original exercise, not a reported employer interview question. A multilingual evaluation shows an apparent safety gap, but translation quality and task difficulty may differ across groups. Prepare a follow-up study.

See a worked response

A defensible response

Specify the behavior being evaluated and distinguish harmful-task controls from benign requests. Review translation and task equivalence with appropriate expertise, documenting disagreements rather than silently normalizing them away. Use a held-out test set and report uncertainty, error categories, and relevant subgroup differences. Check whether a proposed improvement increases inappropriate refusals on benign tasks. Preserve reproducible configurations and the evaluation boundary. The sample should support a limited conclusion about the tested conditions, not a general claim that a model is safe in every language.

Check your answer

Are tasks comparable across languages? Could a higher refusal rate improve one score while making benign use worse?

Prepare your application

An apparent safety gap across languages might reflect the model, the translation or the test itself. For an Anthropic research or engineering application, show how you would distinguish those explanations. Bring a bounded experiment, readable code or an evaluation note that makes uncertainty and failure cases inspectable rather than claiming safety from one aggregate score.

Choose your application route

Work to compare: Engineering and infrastructure; Product management; Data, AI, or research; Design or user research; Go-to-market or customer roles; Operations, finance, or people functions.

Prepare one example: A research or product memo with question, method, assumptions, evaluation, failure modes, safety implications, and reproducible result.

Ask the team: Which tradeoff involving frontier model research, alignment and interpretability, or infrastructure appears most often on the team?

Before applying: Check the vacancy’s degree or experience gate, term, worksite, pay basis and deadline. This is preparation guidance, not a verified 2027 internship list. A suggested work sample is not an application requirement.

Choose the work, then the evidence

Anthropic is a frontier AI research and product company focused on reliable, interpretable, and steerable systems. That broad description hides very different teams and evidence standards. Start by identifying the role family, level, geography, work model, product or business area, and the operating problem behind the opening.

Read the job description twice. On the first pass, mark non-negotiable qualifications. On the second, underline repeated problem language such as frontier model research, alignment and interpretability, infrastructure, product engineering, policy and societal impacts, go-to-market. Repeated language can suggest priorities, but it does not prove the team's internal problem. Treat that interpretation as a hypothesis.

Role familyHigh-signal proof
Engineering and infrastructureProduction systems, architecture, performance, reliability, security, and debugging evidence tied to research, engineering, policy, product, and deployment work where capability, safety, reliability, and real-world usefulness must be considered together.
Product managementProblem selection, prioritization, metrics, tradeoffs, launch execution, and adoption across frontier model research, alignment and interpretability, or adjacent products.
Data, AI, or researchMethod selection, data quality, evaluation design, causal limits, failure modes, and evidence that the work changed a product or operating decision.
Design or user researchA decision-focused portfolio showing user evidence, alternatives, accessibility, collaboration, craft, and measured outcome rather than polished screens alone.
Go-to-market or customer rolesCustomer diagnosis, product fluency, account or partner strategy, adoption, commercial outcomes, and a credible feedback loop into product teams.
Operations, finance, or people functionsMechanisms, controls, planning, risk, service levels, and cross-functional delivery that support research, engineering, policy, product, and deployment work where capability, safety, reliability, and real-world usefulness must be considered together.

Make one result inspectable

For the work described here, useful priorities are exceptional technical or functional depth, clear reasoning under uncertainty, serious engagement with AI safety, collaboration and intellectual honesty, ability to turn research into reliable systems. Treat these as editorial preparation criteria, not an employer scoring system.

Weak: Conducted research on large language model evaluation.

Illustrative rewrite, not a real candidate result: Designed a multilingual refusal-evaluation suite with adversarial and benign controls, uncovered a 19-point robustness gap, and shipped the harness into pre-release model review with reproducible datasets.

Interview preparation and permitted tools

Follow the written invitation for the role, country and stage. Confirm the assessment format, permitted tools and any rules on AI assistance; keep restricted tasks independent. Use only public or authorized material in a work sample. Be ready to explain the method, a failed assumption and your own contribution.
