EY application practice

Fictional practice, not an employer interview question.

Test your judgment with this case

Original exercise, not a reported employer interview question. A working-capital analysis suggests a large opportunity, but business units use incompatible definitions. Prepare the next client discussion.

See a worked response

A defensible response

Reconcile definitions before combining the figures. Trace a small sample to source records and identify which differences affect the decision. Present a transparent baseline, the unresolved items, and a bounded range of scenarios rather than one false-precision total. Recommend an owner and next action for each material gap. Separate identified opportunity from realized cash or operational improvement. In an interview, explain your own analytical and communication contribution without claiming that the entire client's result came from your model.

Check your answer

Do the units measure the same thing? What source evidence supports the part of the conclusion you would act on today?

Prepare your application

A working-capital opportunity is not comparable across business units until their definitions are comparable. For EY, prepare to reconcile the inputs before presenting the recommendation. Audit, tax, transactions and consulting require different evidence, but all benefit from an explanation of what you checked and what the client should do next.

Choose your application route

Work to compare: Client-facing consulting or advisory; Data, digital, or technology delivery; Deals, audit, tax, risk, or specialist work; Project and program leadership; Research, knowledge, and internal functions.

Prepare one example: A role-fit and story packet mapping professional standards, analytical examples, client communication, leadership, and measurable impact.

Ask the team: Which tradeoff involving assurance, tax, or consulting appears most often on the team?

Choose the work, then the evidence

EY is a global professional-services organization spanning assurance, tax, consulting, strategy, and transactions. That broad description hides very different teams and evidence standards. Start by identifying the role family, level, geography, work model, product or business area, and the operating problem behind the opening.

Read the job description twice. On the first pass, mark non-negotiable qualifications. On the second, underline repeated problem language such as assurance, tax, consulting, EY-Parthenon strategy, transactions, technology and risk. Repeated language can suggest priorities, but it does not prove the team's internal problem. Treat that interpretation as a hypothesis.

Role familyHigh-signal proof
Client-facing consulting or advisoryStructured problem solving, hypothesis-driven analysis, executive communication, team contribution, and client implementation impact.
Data, digital, or technology deliveryArchitecture or analytics depth plus the ability to turn technology into measurable client results within client work that combines technical quality, analytics, innovation, global collaboration, and purpose-led leadership.
Deals, audit, tax, risk, or specialist workRelevant technical standards, professional judgment, evidence quality, controls, and the ability to explain implications to non-specialists.
Project and program leadershipWorkplan design, stakeholder alignment, issue escalation, team development, quality control, and quantified delivery outcomes.
Research, knowledge, and internal functionsDomain expertise, reusable intellectual capital, service mindset, and evidence that your work improved client or firm decisions.

Make one result inspectable

For the work described here, useful priorities are integrity and respect, analytical mindset, innovation mindset, global and inclusive collaboration, courage to lead with purpose. Treat these as editorial preparation criteria, not an employer scoring system.

Weak: Assisted with client analysis and worked in cross-functional teams.

Illustrative rewrite, not a real candidate result: Built a working-capital diagnostic across five business units, reconciled inconsistent data with finance leaders, and identified actions that released $22 million while improving forecast controls.

Interview preparation and permitted tools

Follow the written invitation for the role, country and stage. Confirm the assessment format, permitted tools and any rules on AI assistance; keep restricted tasks independent. Use only public or authorized material in a work sample. Be ready to explain the method, a failed assumption and your own contribution.
