McKinsey & Company application practice

Fictional practice, not an employer interview question.

Test your judgment with this case

Original exercise, not a reported employer interview question. A procurement analysis identifies apparent savings, but plant leaders warn that switching suppliers could interrupt production. Prepare a recommendation.

See a worked response

A defensible response

Separate quoted price savings from realizable total value. Establish volume, transition cost, quality, service, and implementation assumptions. Identify the categories where a reversible pilot can test the largest uncertainty. Explain what the client must do, who owns the decision, and which result would stop the change. In the personal-experience discussion, distinguish your analysis and influence from the wider team's delivery. Do not claim annualized opportunity as realized savings, and be prepared to revise the recommendation when an operating constraint changes.

Check your answer

Are the savings an estimate or a delivered result? Which implementation assumption creates the largest downside?

Prepare your application

A procurement model can identify savings that a plant cannot safely realize. Prepare a McKinsey case that brings supplier capacity, switching risk and implementation into the recommendation. Show which apparent saving you would reject, and what evidence would persuade an operating team that the remaining opportunity is real.

Choose your application route

Work to compare: Client-facing consulting or advisory; Data, digital, or technology delivery; Deals, audit, tax, risk, or specialist work; Project and program leadership; Research, knowledge, and internal functions.

Prepare one example: A one-page experience and case-preparation portfolio mapping quantified impact stories, leadership examples, analytical strengths, and target practices or offices.

Ask the team: Which tradeoff involving strategy, operations, or organization appears most often on the team?

Choose the work, then the evidence

McKinsey & Company is a global management consulting firm. That broad description hides very different teams and evidence standards. Start by identifying the role family, level, geography, work model, product or business area, and the operating problem behind the opening.

Read the job description twice. On the first pass, mark non-negotiable qualifications. On the second, underline repeated problem language such as strategy, operations, organization, digital and analytics, implementation, industry expertise. Repeated language can suggest priorities, but it does not prove the team's internal problem. Treat that interpretation as a hypothesis.

Role familyHigh-signal proof
Client-facing consulting or advisoryStructured problem solving, hypothesis-driven analysis, executive communication, team contribution, and client implementation impact.
Data, digital, or technology deliveryArchitecture or analytics depth plus the ability to turn technology into measurable client results within high-stakes client problems requiring structured analysis, leadership, communication, judgment, and implementation influence.
Deals, audit, tax, risk, or specialist workRelevant technical standards, professional judgment, evidence quality, controls, and the ability to explain implications to non-specialists.
Project and program leadershipWorkplan design, stakeholder alignment, issue escalation, team development, quality control, and quantified delivery outcomes.
Research, knowledge, and internal functionsDomain expertise, reusable intellectual capital, service mindset, and evidence that your work improved client or firm decisions.

Make one result inspectable

For the work described here, useful priorities are personal impact, entrepreneurial drive, inclusive leadership, structured problem solving, client-ready communication. Treat these as editorial preparation criteria, not an employer scoring system.

Weak: Supported a cost-reduction project and presented findings to a client.

Illustrative rewrite, not a real candidate result: Built a driver-based procurement model across 11 categories, aligned skeptical plant leaders through working sessions, and helped launch sourcing changes that captured $14 million in annualized savings.

Interview preparation and permitted tools
