Recruiting and interview process
Candidate report · 2026-09-05
Glassdoor's page, opened September 5, displayed 26 self-reported interview ratings and an update date of June 2, 2026. Three visible accounts were examined: mechanical technician, compliance analyst and risk analyst. They described different sequences, including two or three conversations and, in the risk account, scenario discussion. None establishes an intern interview protocol. Ask the recruiter which stages and technical exercises apply to the actual role. The anonymous reports are useful preparation clues, not verified descriptions of every team's process. [6]
Intern candidates should prepare behavioral stories around teamwork, prioritization, learning speed and safety-conscious judgment. Then add function depth: finance modeling, accounting, IT troubleshooting or supply-chain analytics. The exact team should drive the technical preparation.
Requirements & timing
Candidate requirements and sponsorship
The program seeks bachelor's or master's students with communication, prioritization and applicable software skills. It states eligibility to work in the United States without company sponsorship. The exact job can add major, coursework or other requirements; the program page does not establish a universal GPA cutoff. [1]
Pay & location
Pay, location and program economics
Dated role · 2026-09-05
Targa's recurring program description states that the internship is paid. [1] It does not publish one universal hourly rate, housing package or relocation allowance on the program page reviewed here. Those terms should be captured from the exact requisition and offer.
Ask whether the internship is site-based, whether travel to operating facilities is expected, and whether mileage or travel is reimbursed. Infrastructure work can create valuable field exposure, but logistics affect the student’s cost and schedule.
Work, teams and company background

Projects and operating context
Use that context to ask a better question: does the team support a project before construction, during start-up or after the asset begins operating? Each stage raises different questions about costs, schedules, suppliers, reliability and performance. A public expansion announcement does not establish the intern's assignment.
The summer program
The separate Analyst Development Program is a three-year full-time program with rotations of roughly twelve months. Ask whether an internship can lead into it, but do not assume that its rotations or a return offer are part of the summer placement. [1]
Historical example · 2026-09-05
A useful first conversation establishes the department, project, supervisor and final deliverable. The business-function examples below are editorial explanations and preparation suggestions, not assignments promised by the general program page. The later engineering and environmental examples draw on specific historical postings.
The business
Targa Resources is a large U.S. midstream energy company. Its own company profile describes businesses in gathering, compressing, treating and processing natural gas; storing, fractionating, transporting and selling natural gas liquids; supporting LPG exports; and handling crude-oil gathering, storage and terminaling. For a student, the first distinction is that Targa is an infrastructure and logistics operator, not an upstream exploration-and-production company. [3]
That matters because the business problems differ. Targa connects production basins to processing, pipelines, fractionation, storage and end markets. Finance and commercial teams therefore work around infrastructure utilization, commodity flows, contracts and capital projects. Supply-chain and operations teams support plants, pipelines and logistics. Technology supports an asset-heavy physical network.
The Permian Basin is central to this operating context. In its August 2026 release, Targa attributed stronger gathering-and-processing results to record Permian inlet volumes, partly offset by lower natural-gas prices. For preparation, that is a reason to distinguish throughput, prices and operating costs rather than assume that higher commodity prices alone determine results. [5]
Finance: planning, credit, treasury and risk
For planning-oriented work, prepare a model with transparent assumptions, sensitivities and a short management-ready explanation of the result. If the placement is credit, treasury or another risk function, the useful evidence changes. Ask which team owns the internship and what output it expects rather than treating the full-time insurance role as the definition of all Targa risk work.
Accounting and tax
That evidence makes preparation more specific. Be ready to trace an operating input through revenue or cost calculations, explain why a reconciliation did not tie, and show how you documented the fix or control. If the internship is Tax, property accounting or another accounting group, the workflow will differ; the interview question is which records, systems and month-end outputs the intern will actually support.
Historical example · 2026-09-05
The separate full-time Analyst Development Program also lists Accounting & Tax, showing that Targa has a continuing early-career pipeline beyond a single summer. Interns should ask whether successful students have historically returned into that program or other full-time roles.
Information Technology
For an IT application, prepare a project you can defend end-to-end, but make the business user visible: what process failed, how you diagnosed it, what data or integration was involved, how you tested the change and what happened after deployment. Ask whether the internship supports commercial systems, financial systems, data, infrastructure, cybersecurity or another team before choosing which technical story to lead with.
Supply chain and physical operations
An intern could plausibly support a scoped piece of that workflow only if the actual placement says so: bid analysis, contract data, supplier-performance reporting, sourcing research or process metrics, for example. Ask what decision the intern’s analysis feeds, which operating or project group is the customer, and whether the deliverable is a sourcing recommendation, contract record, KPI report or another defined output.
Supply-chain candidates should prepare examples where they quantified a bottleneck, evaluated vendors, improved a process or reconciled demand and inventory. Ask how closely the intern works with engineering, construction and field operations.
Commercial and logistics exposure
Commercial roles in midstream energy can involve contracts, transportation, market access and optimization of physical flows. Students from finance, economics or energy programs may find these roles especially interesting because they connect market signals to infrastructure.
A candidate should learn enough natural-gas and NGL terminology to understand the value chain but avoid speculative commodity opinions. The stronger interview conversation explains how infrastructure constraints and contracts affect decisions.
Employee experience and safety
Candidate report · 2026-09-05
Seven visible Indeed review excerpts, dated August 2, 2025 through September 3, 2026, were examined on September 5. A Tulsa accounting analyst criticized staffing and hours; an Eunice pipeline inspector described supportive conditions. Other excerpts raised management or progression concerns, while a project manager praised the workplace and a process engineer liked compensation but criticized work-life balance. These are self-selected employee accounts, not an intern sample, and their allegations were not independently verified. They show why the actual function and worksite matter more than a company-wide culture label. [9]
Use those accounts to ask about the team's staffing, supervisor availability and how deadlines affect working hours. A specific example from the last intern's project is more useful than assuming either the strongest praise or the harshest criticism applies to your offer.
Who should prioritize Targa
Targa is a strong target for finance, accounting, supply-chain and IT students who want energy exposure without pursuing an upstream producer. Its recurring program describes a paid summer placement, while the separate development program provides a full-time route to investigate. [1]
The company is particularly attractive for students interested in infrastructure economics, physical logistics and capital projects. It may also appeal to candidates considering energy banking, infrastructure investing or corporate finance because the operating context is asset-intensive and contract-driven.
Engineering and environmental work
Historical example · 2026-09-05
The business-program overview does not cover every technical route. Targa's historical Mechanical Engineering Intern—Operations role, requisition 260132, was posted March 13, 2026 in Mont Belvieu and was marked closed when checked September 5. It required active pursuit of an engineering bachelor's degree; mechanical engineering was preferred. The posting also specified outdoor and physical work, including lifting at least 50 pounds, and possible overtime, shifts, weekends and callouts. Those conditions distinguish it from a desk-only internship. They belong to this historical role, not every future engineering opening. Ask the actual team about duties, schedule, supervision and accommodations before accepting. [7]
For an engineering application, prepare a project that shows how you moved from a symptom to a tested explanation. Describe the equipment or system, measurements, competing explanations, test and result. A lab or design project is useful when your own contribution is clear. The question to ask a hiring team is whether the intern joins operations support, project engineering, reliability or another group, and who checks the work before it informs an operating decision.
A suitable preparation exercise for environmental or safety-support work is an inspection-record audit using fictional data: missing fields, inconsistent dates, unresolved observations and corrective-action ownership. Explain what the records establish and what needs an experienced person's judgment. Ask the employer about training, site access, supervision, travel and how much time the intern spends collecting information versus analyzing it. That distinguishes a substantive field-linked assignment from a vague sustainability title.
Before accepting
Compare the actual project and team with the offer's economics. A clear assignment with reliable feedback may be more useful than a broader title with no defined owner. Resolve the work address and transport needs before choosing housing.
Students should verify start/end dates, location, pay, housing/relocation, work schedule, exact team, travel, technical requirements and return-offer path for each role.
Research context
Targa Resources
Paid midstream-energy internships across finance, accounting, IT and supply chain
Research dated September 4–5, 2026 · Revised September 5, 2026
Targa is worth investigating when you want to understand the financial, technical or operating work behind energy infrastructure. Choose a function first: a planning model, an accounting reconciliation, an IT system and a facility assignment teach different things. The strongest application connects a relevant project to that work.
The three-year Analyst Development Program is a separate full-time early-career program and is not merged into the summer internship.
