An Academy internship and a partner-company internship have different employers.
Gold Rising combines internships with a broader industry-development program. The Academy’s overview directs applicants to internships with the Academy or participating partner companies. Start with the actual position and employer. Interest in the overall program does not submit you to every participating company.

| Last stated application window | January 5–February 5, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PT, with possible earlier closing because of volume. Past cycle only. |
| Last stated program dates | June 9–August 4, 2026. Not a 2027 schedule. |
| Internships | The page says all are paid; Academy interns work at least 20 hours weekly and partner hours vary. |
| Student audience | The 2026 page names community college, trade-school and university applicants plus graduate students. Its class-year range is not rolled forward here. |
| Additional support | Stipends are described for students both living and attending school outside California; amount and individual terms need confirmation. |
| 2027 action | Watch the official route and prepare evidence for a specific kind of work; no exact new deadline is established here. |
As of September 16, 2026, the application page gives 2026 dates and eligibility wording. The useful next step is preparation and checking official updates, not treating the previous January–February window as a confirmed 2027 deadline.
Choose the work behind the film-industry name.
Begin with a function you want to test. A communications task, research assignment, archive project and production-coordination role do not require the same work sample. Read the description for verbs: research, organize, edit, track, analyze or assist. Then ask what a useful output would look like.
If you are interested in coordination, prepare to explain how you kept a team or event organized. If you are interested in research, choose an example that distinguishes a documented fact from an interpretation. If you are interested in creative work, explain both the intended audience and the decisions you made. The role’s actual tasks should determine which example deserves space.
A broad enthusiasm for film can explain why you looked at the opportunity. It does not explain why you would be useful in a particular team. Connect the enthusiasm to an experience: what you tried, what you learned and which part of the work you now want to understand more deeply.
A clear handoff can be a stronger sample than a large unfinished production.
Here is an original preparation exercise. Plan a small student screening using fictional information. Create a running order, a responsibilities list and a change log. The point is not to stage an event or use copyrighted material; it is to demonstrate how you would make a plan understandable to the people using it.
Task-specific portfolio cover note
Introduce a change: a discussion speaker arrives fifteen minutes late. Which part of the schedule can move, who needs to know and what must not be promised without approval? Record the revised plan and the reason. A useful coordination sample makes dependencies visible rather than merely presenting an attractive timetable.
For a real application, use a project you actually completed or label a practice sample clearly. Explain what you owned and what others did. A student screening does not become an Academy production because you use it to apply to the Academy. Its value is the judgment and reliability you can demonstrate.
Make every claim easy to explain in a follow-up conversation.
Open your résumé and ask what evidence supports each bullet. A claim about improving a process should identify the process and your change. A claim about an audience result should have an actual measurement. When the project was collaborative, state your part instead of borrowing the entire team’s work.
Use the internship’s instructions to choose portfolio material. A reel is not automatically the right response to an administrative or research role, and an unrequested large attachment can make an application harder to review. Supply the requested format and make permitted links accessible without exposing private information.
Prepare a short answer about feedback. What did a reviewer find unclear, and what changed in your next version? That gives an interviewer a concrete example of how you work with others. Avoid a story in which every collaborator is unreasonable and your first idea is always correct.
Evaluate the actual offer, not an assumed industry opportunity.
When a role opens, confirm its employer, pay basis, workplace, dates and weekly hours. Put any Gold Rising activities on the same calendar. A partner company’s internship dates may differ from the overall program dates, so one line on a website is not a complete schedule.
Clarify any relocation or stipend support before booking travel. Support described for students outside California is not a universal housing guarantee. Use the actual offer to separate wages, conditional assistance and expenses you must cover yourself.
Keep other applications moving while the next cycle is unannounced. Relevant work in a campus organization, local arts nonprofit or another employer can build evidence without waiting for one brand. The aim is to find a supervised role whose work and terms are useful to you, then do that work well.
