Match the request to the relationship

Someone who supervised your work can speak to it. Someone you met for 15 minutes may only know your interests. Give the second person enough context to decide without implying they have already endorsed you.

An informational conversation is not permission to name someone as your referrer. Berkeley distinguishes those learning conversations from job requests. Make the new request explicit.

Make it easy to review the role and your fit

Read the requirements yourself before sending the request. Give the contact the current job link and identifier, your relevant résumé, a short fit statement and any actual deadline. They should not have to search the careers site or rewrite your life story.

Example fit statement, using fictional experience: 'I am applying to the operations internship because it involves order analysis. In a statistics course, I built an order-exception report; in my campus job, I maintain the booking log and investigate conflicting requests.'

A request you can adapt

Subject: Referral question — [role and job ID]

Hello [Name],

Thank you for discussing [actual topic] with me. I found [role and link], which involves [specific responsibility]. My experience with [truthful example] is why I am interested.

Would you be comfortable referring me through your company's process? I have attached my résumé and included a short fit summary below. I have [already applied / not yet applied]; please let me know whether the referral process requires a particular sequence. I understand if you would prefer not to refer me.

Thank you, [Your name]

For a person you have never spoken with, do not invent a previous conversation. Introduce how you found their professional contact and state the request honestly. They may reasonably ask to speak first or direct you to the normal application.

Already applied? Ask before changing anything

Referral procedures are employer-specific. Ask whether a referral can be attached to the existing application or whether a separate official link is needed. Do not withdraw an application or create another account merely because a contact offers to help.

When a deadline is close, say so with the real date. If the referral sequence remains unresolved, ask recruiting how to preserve a timely application. Do not miss the required application deadline while waiting for an optional referral.

Keep three events distinct: asking for a referral, receiving confirmation it was submitted, and completing the application. None of them is an interview invitation.

Send one useful update

Thank the contact for the action they actually took. If they referred you and an interview follows, a short update is enough: 'Thank you again for the referral. Recruiting has invited me to interview next week.' Follow any communication instructions rather than asking the contact to repeatedly chase the team.

If they decline, apply directly when eligible. The request should leave the relationship intact, not make the other person responsible for your outcome.
