Start here: First Forward is a short Bain exploratory program, not an internship

Bain currently lists First Forward among its North American exploratory programs and labels the opportunity as a Program rather than employment. The dedicated page describes a 1.5-day, in-person summit with immersive sessions, case discussions, professional-development workshops, networking and Bain mentors who share a similar path.

AudienceStudents building connections around first-generation college or lower-socioeconomic-household experience

Displayed event datesMay 28–29; the current page does not label these as 2027 dates
Selection stepNo formal interview; applicants receive video-format questions through HireVue after the deadline
Compensation / travel / housingNot stated on the reviewed First Forward page

The page is for second-year undergraduates who want to build connections around being the first in their family to attend college or who identify with growing up in a lower socioeconomic household. Bain explicitly says participants do not need prior business experience.

Applications for the displayed cycle are closed and Bain says to check back for its next application cycle. The FAQ still displays May 28–29 as event dates, but it does not label those dates as 2027. Treat them as closed-cycle evidence, not the next cohort's schedule.

Use the live next-cycle application to resolve Bain's two graduation-window phrasings

The current First Forward page contains two slightly different eligibility phrasings. Its application section says the program is for sophomores who will complete a four-year undergraduate degree in the U.S. by winter 2027 or spring 2028. The FAQ says sophomores attending a school in the U.S. or Canada with an anticipated graduation date between December 2027 and Summer 2028.

Because the displayed cycle is closed, do not collapse those two statements into a made-up universal rule for the next cohort. When Bain opens the next application, use the live form or requisition for the controlling school-country and graduation-window requirements.

Bain's FAQ also clarifies that applicants do not need to identify as both first-generation and low-income. It defines first generation as being the first in the family to obtain a four-year degree, while the lower-income pathway is based on identifying with growing up in a lower socioeconomic household.

BEL and CREW matter because prior participation can close the First Forward route

First Forward has an unusually concrete overlap rule. Bain says students who already participated in BEL or CREW are not eligible for First Forward. Students who applied to BEL or CREW but were not accepted are encouraged to apply to First Forward.

How the current Bain pages interact
ProgramCurrent published distinctionFirst Forward interaction
First Forward1.5-day in-person summit for the described first-generation / lower-income pathwayPrimary program on this page
CREWSeparate sophomore exploratory program centered on women leaders in consulting and leadership developmentPrior participation makes a student ineligible for First Forward
BELSeparate undergraduate exploratory program focused on experiencing consultant lifePrior participation makes a student ineligible for First Forward

That makes the order of applications matter more than a generic 'apply to every Bain program' strategy. CREW is a separate exploratory program for second-year undergraduates interested in hearing from women leaders in consulting and building a leadership toolkit; its 2026 cycle is closed and the page says to check back for 2027. BEL is a separate exploratory program focused on experiencing consultant life; its 2026 cycle is also closed and Bain says to check back for 2027.

Do not infer that BEL, CREW or First Forward automatically produces an internship interview. The First Forward page describes the program as preparation and exploration, and its ACI guidance is a later, separate application path.

Prepare for the actual selection step: video questions, not a formal interview

Bain's current FAQ says there are no formal First Forward interviews. After the application deadline, applicants are asked to answer several questions in video format through HireVue.

Prepare concise examples you can explain without pretending Bain published a case-interview rubric for this program: why strategy consulting interests you, what you have learned from a project or responsibility, how your background shaped a decision, and what you want to learn from the summit. Keep those as preparation prompts, not claims about the exact HireVue questions.

The program itself includes a case simulation, case discussions, professional-development work and networking. Those activities are part of the summit after selection; they should not be confused with the applicant-selection step.

First Forward can prepare you for ACI, but it is not an ACI offer

Bain tells students who are not selected for First Forward that they can still apply later and specifically points to the Associate Consultant Internship for the summer before the third year. That is a next application, not an automatic conversion from First Forward.

ACI is materially different employment. Bain labels it Temporary Full-Time, staffs interns on real client case teams, and says U.S. compensation is a $9,000 monthly base salary. The internship typically targets students with one full summer left before graduation, subject to office-specific rules.

Use First Forward to learn the work and build a more informed consulting application. Then recheck the exact ACI office requirements, deadlines and eligibility when your academic stage fits. Do not transfer ACI pay, benefits or employment status onto the short First Forward summit.
