Read the marketing specialty
Estée Lauder Companies' internship material describes marketing work in digital, product and consumer-insight areas, with roles such as marketing analytics and digital consumer engagement. That is broader than posting on social media. An ecommerce-oriented assignment may overlap with these functions, but the exact posting should define the work.
Separate brand-level, corporate and channel responsibilities. A creative portfolio can support one application, while a campaign or conversion analysis may be more relevant to another. Do not assume that product enthusiasm demonstrates research, analysis or execution skills by itself.

Compare questions across the purchase journey
Use the following original framework to select a preparation task. It does not claim that every company organizes its teams this way. The useful distinction is the decision the work supports and the evidence needed to make it.
| Lens | Question | Useful artifact |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer insight | What problem or preference needs investigation? | A neutral research brief with sampling limits |
| Brand or product marketing | Which message fits a defined audience? | A message comparison with reasons and a test plan |
| Ecommerce analysis | Where does the purchase journey lose users? | A funnel with consistent units and periods |
| Marketing economics | Does the change improve contribution after costs? | A transparent scenario model |
Calculate contribution rather than stopping at conversion
In a fictional campaign, 10,000 visits convert at 2%, producing 200 orders. Average order value is $50 and gross margin before campaign cost is assumed to be 60%. Revenue is $10,000 and gross contribution before the campaign is $6,000. With $4,000 campaign cost, the simplified remainder is $2,000.
Now suppose a promotion raises conversion to 2.5% but lowers average order value to $40, with the same assumed margin percentage and campaign cost. There are 250 orders, but revenue remains $10,000 and the simplified remainder remains $2,000. Higher conversion alone does not establish better economics.
Returns, shipping, discounts, repeat purchases and incrementality are not modeled. State those omissions. This is an original teaching exercise, not a claim about any beauty company's margins or campaign performance.
Data and worked inputs
Make the creative work testable
Choose a fictional product brief and a specific audience. Draft two messages that differ in one meaningful respect, then explain what you would measure and what would count as a useful result. Keep an appealing concept separate from evidence that it changes behavior.
For consumer research, avoid leading questions that tell respondents which answer is desirable. Record how people were recruited and what the sample cannot represent. For a portfolio, label mock creative as mock creative and use only images or other materials you are entitled to use. Do not imply that the brand commissioned or approved it.
Match the application to the actual team
Read whether the role asks for research, analytics, content, commercial coordination or a mix. Show one project that demonstrates the relevant task and explain your own contribution. A spreadsheet should have clear formulas; a creative sample should have a brief and a reasoned choice; a research memo should acknowledge its sample limits.
Check the precise program and degree stage. Large employers may offer separate undergraduate, graduate and specialized internships. Do not apply a requirement from one program to all of them. Use the official posting for current availability, pay and location.
The next step is a targeted application with evidence, not a generic statement that you love the products.
