Find the right application before comparing deadlines.

CERN’s Summer Student Programme page directs students from the United States, Canada and Japan to national application routes. For the United States, the linked destination is the University of Michigan-CERN Research Experience for Undergraduates. An application deadline for the general CERN route should not be substituted for the U.S. route without confirmation.

U.S. CERN research route: what is and is not confirmed
ItemSource-backed status
Official routeFollow the U.S. link on CERN’s Summer Student Programme page to Michigan-CERN REU.
2027 openingLate November 2026; no exact opening day supplied.
2027 deadlineNot published on the reviewed Michigan landing page.
Program formatMichigan describes nine weeks of research at CERN. Verify the actual 2027 dates when issued.
2027 fundingNot confirmed by the approximate amount beside older program material.
Next actionPrepare your academic and research evidence; use the 2027 application for complete eligibility and documents.

As checked September 16, 2026, the Michigan page says its summer 2027 portal will open in late November 2026. Elsewhere on that page, older 2025 language and an approximate stipend remain. Read the cycle-specific notice without quietly refreshing every older detail to 2027.

Do not combine the U.S. route with the general CERN package.

CERN Careers separately describes its Summer Studentship for bachelor’s or master’s students in physics, engineering, computing or mathematics, with at least six semesters completed by the start and other enrollment and prior-CERN restrictions. Its listed duration is eight to thirteen weeks. That overview does not resolve every U.S.-route condition.

The Careers page lists CHF 94 per calendar day as a subsistence allowance, conditional travel support, insurance and assistance finding accommodation. Help finding housing is not free housing. Do not add that allowance to a Michigan stipend or assume the same package applies through the national route.

For comparison only, seventy eligible calendar days at CHF 94 would be CHF 6,580. That is arithmetic under a hypothetical ten-week arrangement, not an actual offer or an employment salary. It says nothing about your final living costs. Keep country, route, currency and award year together when comparing opportunities.

Show how you investigate a technical question.

A strong preparation file identifies a question you can discuss, the methods you have actually used and the part you hope to learn. Physics interest can come from coursework, computation, instrumentation or another genuine experience. Do not pretend to have worked on a particle experiment because you analyzed a public dataset about it.

For a computing-oriented applicant, choose a project whose data definitions and tests are clear. For an experimental interest, describe supervised measurement or equipment work accurately, including your role and limits. For mathematics, explain a modeling assumption and what changes when it fails. A narrow task you understand is better evidence than a page of advanced topics you cannot connect to work.

Read an accessible description of the relevant research area before contacting anybody. Ask a question that shows what you understand and what remains unclear. Do not send requests for confidential experiment data or unrestricted access. The purpose is to find an appropriate training setting, not to sound as though you already belong to every collaboration.

Prepare one figure you can defend without its caption.

Use an existing permitted project and choose one figure. Write down the population, the units, how the observations were collected or selected and what the figure does not show. Reproduce one calculation by a different method. Then explain why the plot supports your conclusion and which alternative explanation you have not excluded.

One-figure research explanation

Question the figure addresses: Data source and permission: Units and sample definition: Excluded or missing observations: Method I implemented: Independent check: Conclusion supported: Alternative explanation or limitation: What I would investigate next:

Here is an original illustration of the habit, not a CERN task. A sensor produces ten readings, but a plotting script silently discards two invalid entries and labels the chart “ten measurements.” The immediate improvement is to report eight valid observations and two rejected entries with their reasons. It is not to interpolate convenient values and claim the missing measurements occurred.

If you share the figure in an application, follow the actual instructions and permissions. A public dataset still needs attribution; a research group’s internal file needs permission. You can create a separate synthetic example to show the method, but label it as synthetic and do not claim it demonstrates performance in a real experiment.

Prepare now without making commitments on stale terms.

Use the period before the portal opens to gather transcripts, identify appropriate referees and improve the explanation of your work. Do not guess the exact number of letters or reuse another route’s checklist. When the 2027 materials appear, compare them with your preparation file and resolve the differences.

For the practical decision, ask about the actual program dates, travel arrangements, accommodation, insurance and payment timing. A summer abroad can require deposits and purchases before funding arrives. List those obligations separately from the final award total. Keep unresolved support unconfirmed rather than treating an old webpage as a guarantee.

After a genuine selection, follow the organizer’s instructions before booking travel. For now, a realistic next step is a research-evidence note and a reminder to check the official opening notice, not a nonrefundable flight. Continue considering other programs whose timelines and eligibility fit; one prestigious location should not become your only summer plan.
