Make the eligibility check before the essay
Read the official page for the intake you plan to join. ‘Junior at the time of application’ and ‘rising junior next summer’ are different requirements. The same is true of a permanent-residence rule and permission to find temporary housing nearby.
| Check | Find the exact answer |
|---|---|
| Student status | Required grade or age, and the date on which it is measured |
| Location | Residence boundary, worksite and transport responsibility |
| Time | Required program dates and whether absences are permitted |
| Money | Cash pay, unpaid status, fees and your travel or care costs |
| Application | Current-cycle deadline, documents and separate reference deadlines |
NIST SHIP: check both the local requirement and the intake year
NIST describes SHIP as a seven-week unpaid research internship. Its eligibility page requires U.S. citizenship, junior or senior status at application, at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA, full-program availability and permanent residence within 50 miles of the host campus in Boulder or Gaithersburg. Families provide housing and transport.
On September 17, 2026, NIST's 2027 notice says applications are expected in mid-October 2026 and due at the end of January 2027; program dates are undetermined. It does not give an exact closing day or time. The linked application page still labels its timeline 2026 and contains older wording. Use the eventual 2027 announcement, not an assumed January 31 deadline or a copied 2026 schedule.
Check remote supervision and the costs you must cover
For a remote placement, ask whether the operator permits minors working from your state, which meetings you must attend and who supervises you. A remote label does not establish any of those terms.
Before accepting, identify the supervisor, worksite, hours and a task you will be allowed to do. Discuss transport and required permissions with your parent or guardian and school. A respected name does not make an unaffordable commute workable.
The FTC warns against paying for the promise of a job and against checks followed by instructions to send money onward. A genuine paid course is a different purchase, not proof of employment. Evaluate its teaching and price as a course rather than assuming the word internship makes it job experience.

A message that gives a local supervisor enough information
‘I am a [grade] student at [school], available [dates and hours]. I am interested in [specific work your team does]. In [class or activity], I completed [accurate task]. Does your organization offer supervised opportunities for students of my age? I can send a résumé and confirm any school or parent permissions needed.’
Name a real task you have done, even if it was coursework or a club activity. Keep a short résumé ready with your school, expected graduation and relevant experience. Ask a teacher before naming them as a reference. Share documents through the verified application process rather than putting your transcript or home address in an introductory message.
Use a paid-program route and a separate local search
USAJOBS lists high-school students among the groups served by the paid Pathways Internship Program. Students must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at least part-time; individual announcements add their own eligibility, age, qualifications and location requirements. The program description does not mean every Pathways job accepts every high-school applicant.
For local options, ask your counselor which employers have previously supervised students of your age. Search the official pages of nearby universities, local government and organizations in the field you want to explore. Verify whether the result is employment, volunteering, a research placement or tuition-based instruction.
