Record what happens next
Write down the interview date, role, contact, requested materials and expected next step. Distinguish a stated deadline from a guess. 'We plan to finish interviews next week' is not the same as 'You will receive a decision next week'.
Note one answer you would improve and one thing you learned about the role. Do not try to infer selection from a friendly tone, a short meeting or a delayed portal update.
A thank-you that says something specific
Berkeley recommends a thank-you within 24 hours; follow the employer's communication instructions when they differ. Keep it brief.
Hello [Name],
Thank you for discussing the [role] with me today. Your explanation of [specific assignment] helped me understand where the intern would contribute. I remain interested in the work, especially [one concrete connection to your experience].
Thank you for your time, [Your name]
Send through the provided contact route. You do not need to find every panel member's personal email or retell the whole interview.

Send what you promised before asking for an update
If you agreed to send a sample or confirm availability, do that in the requested format. Check the link and sharing permissions. A concise cover note can say: 'As discussed in our interview for [role], here is [requested item]. My contribution was [brief explanation].'
Correct a material factual error when needed, such as a misstated graduation date. Do not send a replacement answer merely because you now have a more polished sentence.
A status question after the stated timeline passes
Hello [Name],
I am following up on my interview for [role] on [date]. You mentioned that the team expected to share an update by [actual stated date or interval]. Is there an updated timeline for the next step?
Thank you, [Your name]
If no timeline was given, remove that sentence. Our suggested default is one check-in after about a week, unless the employer has asked you to wait longer or you face a real earlier deadline. After a reasonable follow-up, continue other applications rather than sending daily reminders.
When another offer has a real deadline
Hello [Name],
I remain interested in [role]. I have another offer with a response deadline of [date, time and timezone]. Could you let me know whether your process might reach a decision before then? I understand the timing may not be adjustable.
Thank you, [Your name]
Use this only for a genuine offer and deadline. You can also ask the offering employer for more time, but do not count on an extension until it is granted. Make the decision using the offers you actually have; an encouraging interview is not an alternative offer.
