Send the recruiter a specific proposal

‘Thank you for the offer for [role]. My last required final is on [date], and I can begin full-time work on [date] after moving. Could the program support that start? Would the end date or training arrangement need to change?’

Use your last required assessment, not the last day of classes or a date you hope an instructor will approve. Allow time to travel and move. If only one exam conflicts, name that time window rather than asking to miss the whole first week.

Find out which dates are fixed

Compare your exams and attendance requirements with the employer's orientation, training and team start dates. Stanford, for example, tells hosts that its quarter calendar typically runs into mid-June. Your own registrar and course schedule determine your actual availability.

Match the proposal to the conflict
Possible arrangementWhat it solvesWhat still needs approval
Later full-time startExams and moving timeMissed training and minimum duration
Reduced hours before finals endA limited scheduling overlapExact hours, pay and required meetings
Remote startTravel or location timingExam conflicts and permitted work location
Later cohortAn inflexible program calendarA place in that cohort and its requirements

Ask the program owner which sessions must be attended live. An optional welcome event and required safety training are different problems. Ask your instructor separately about any permitted exam alternative; employer approval does not excuse an assessment.

Check the end date and budget again

Suppose a fictional internship runs June 1–August 7, but your exams end June 10 and you need June 11–12 to move. You propose June 15. Keeping August 7 as the end date would remove two weeks from the original placement.

Ask whether the employer accepts the shorter placement or needs a later finish. An extension could conflict with your next term. Fewer paid weeks could also reduce earnings while leaving the same housing bill.

Recalculate pay, rent, travel and the first-paycheck date using the agreed arrangement. Do not book the move using the old budget.

Check academic credit and work authorization separately

If the internship is for credit, ask your school whether the revised dates and hours still satisfy the course. The employer cannot approve credit, just as the school cannot promise a later start on the employer's behalf.

If you need immigration-based work permission, take the revised employer, hours and dates to your designated school official before starting work or required training. Check the school's current process, not just a general guide. As of September 17, 2026, UTA's CPT page says new elective CPT applications are paused. That is a UTA-specific notice, not a nationwide rule.

Get the revised terms confirmed

Confirm the start, end, required hours, work location, pay and missed-training arrangement in writing. Complete an offer amendment if the employer requires one.

If your response deadline arrives first, ask: ‘Could I respond by [date] while we confirm the revised start?’ The deadline changes only if the employer agrees.

When no permitted arrangement fits, decline that placement and ask about a later cohort. Do not accept on the assumption that an unapproved exam change, missed training or unavailable work permission will work out.
