Check the cohort before preparing its application
Leap's FAQ points to cohort announcements for application windows rather than giving one universal next deadline. Use the announcement and the chosen pathway's requirements together. An email to the program is not an application.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Format | Paid, full-time 16-week experience with Microsoft or partner sponsoring teams. |
| Eligibility | Pathway and cohort rules apply; required work authorization and no immigration sponsorship. |
| Next window | No universal next deadline established by the reviewed FAQ. |
| Application | Check public portfolio links and the instructions before submitting; submitted applications cannot be edited. |
| Later employment | Completing the cohort does not guarantee a Microsoft job. |
| Condition | What the published guidance says |
|---|---|
| Location and pathway | Eligibility varies; read the specific cohort and pathway |
| Work authorization | Required in the cohort country throughout the program; no immigration sponsorship |
| Availability | Full-time for the entire 16-week cohort |
| Reston, Virginia positions | The application page lists active Top Secret clearance for these positions only |
| After completion | A Microsoft job is not guaranteed |
Bring a small project you can explain under questioning
Choose an artifact with a clear user, input, output and failure case. Be ready to explain one decision you made, one alternative you rejected and how you checked the result. A polished demo is less useful when you cannot explain what happens to bad input.
An original practice project is an appointment importer. It reads an identifier, date and timezone, then shows which records it accepts and which need correction. Use fictional records. This is not a Leap assignment or a forecast of interview questions.
Test the rows a smooth demo leaves out
Write the expected behavior before implementing the importer. The following is one reasonable specification; the value is in explaining the choice rather than memorizing these rules.
| Input | Expected behavior under this specification |
|---|---|
| Two valid rows with dates, timezones and different IDs | Accept both |
| February 30 | Reject the impossible date and preserve the original input |
| Valid date but no timezone | Request the missing timezone rather than use the developer's location |
| An existing ID with different contents | Report a conflict rather than overwrite the existing appointment |
Prepare the submission and the follow-up questions
Leap's application page asks for an up-to-date LinkedIn profile and publicly accessible links. It says applicants cannot return to edit after submission and describes two 45-minute online interviews covering technical, collaborative and problem-solving skills. Follow any more specific instructions supplied for your cohort.
For the importer, prepare to answer: ‘What happens when the same file is imported twice?’ An unchanged repeat should not accidentally create more appointments. Decide whether the operation creates new records, previews changes or updates existing ones; show conflicts before applying changes.
Your project note should identify what you built, how to run or inspect it, which cases it handles and what remains unfinished. Open shared links while signed out. Public access is not permission to expose client data or credentials.

Resolve the practical terms before committing 16 weeks
Participants may be sponsored by Microsoft or a partner. Pay and health insurance are described in the FAQ, but the individual offer must establish the actual compensation and arrangement. The FAQ uses virtual-program wording while also directing readers to current guidance about in-person activity; confirm the cohort's requirements rather than assuming work from anywhere.
The application page asks you to be free of competing commitments for the cohort. Put the actual dates and required hours beside your classes, work and care obligations. Identify the conflict and ask whether it can be resolved before accepting.
A useful question at offer stage is: ‘Who will sponsor my placement, what are the work location and hours, and what employment terms apply during and after the cohort?’ Budget using the confirmed arrangement, not an assumed Microsoft job afterward.
