As checked September 22, 2026, the current application page lists an October 15, 2026 deadline at 23:59 JST and an expected result announcement in mid-December. OIST marks the schedule tentative, so recheck the live page immediately before submitting.

The four-month minimum is the first decision. If your available dates cannot cover at least 120 days inside the April–September window, this cycle does not fit regardless of how strong the research statement is.

Resolve the four-to-six-month calendar before choosing a lab

“Spring 2027” is the application-round name, not a January arrival date. The placement must fit inside April 1–September 30, 2027. Write your earliest possible start and latest possible end as actual dates and check that the span covers at least 120 days.

A four-month minimum can overlap a university semester even if you start in May or June. Check exams, orientation, travel time and your home institution’s approval before treating the schedule as solved.

This is closer to a short research residency than a typical eight- or ten-week U.S. summer internship. Compare the research value with the semester, internship or home commitments you would give up.

Choose Faculty of Interest by the work, not the lab name

OIST publishes a cycle-specific Faculty & Project Availability table. Use the April–September 2027 column for this round. A listed faculty member is not a guaranteed vacancy: OIST says only a limited number of interns are admitted, not every listed faculty member can take an intern, projects may change and final work is assigned after acceptance in discussion with the intern.

Host-unit fit note
QuestionWhat to write down
Research questionWhat is the group trying to understand or build?
Preparation I can proveCourse, project, method, technique or research task I actually completed
Gap I would need to learnMethod, domain knowledge or tool I have not yet used
Hard prerequisiteAny unit-specific requirement that enthusiasm cannot replace

OIST asks applicants not to contact faculty to obtain approval or support before applying. Submit through the Graduate School process and use the availability table to choose plausible units.

No previous professional internship is published as a universal requirement. That does not make preparation irrelevant. OIST requires an academic background appropriate to the desired host unit, and projects can have specific prerequisites. A course project is useful evidence when you describe exactly what you did rather than upgrading it into “independent research.”

The recommendation can block submission, so request it early

The online application requires transcripts and degree or enrollment evidence, a CV, a Statement of Purpose, one to three recommendation letters, passport or other government ID if a passport is not yet available, and a recent ID photo. English-test scores are optional.

OIST says recommendation letters must come from professorial-level faculty who know you and can describe your academic potential as a researcher; letters from lab members or postdocs are not eligible. You can enter one to three recommenders, but the application cannot be submitted until at least one recommendation is received in the system.

Ask early enough that a delayed letter does not block the submit button. Give the recommender the OIST link and deadline, the host units or research areas you are considering, work they have actually seen from you, and your CV/transcript. Do not ask them to validate accomplishments they did not observe.

Write the Statement of Purpose to both published limits

OIST currently limits the Statement of Purpose to 250 words and 1,500 characters. The application asks what you hope to accomplish at OIST and how the internship fits your broader career plans or aspirations.

A compact structure is: name the research problem or technique; give one piece of preparation you can substantiate; explain what you want to learn at OIST that you cannot yet do; connect that learning to your next academic or research decision; and close with why the selected units are a plausible fit.

Run separate word-count and character-count checks before submission. Staying under 250 words does not guarantee staying under 1,500 characters.

Selection is research-fit review; the published pages do not add a separate interview round

The current application, FAQ and policy pages do not publish a conventional internship interview stage. OIST describes competitive review based on research suitability, academic background, research capabilities and training, available funding and host-unit space. Do not invent an interview round.

If accepted, OIST provides the offer through the application system and works with the host unit and intern to finalize dates. OIST lists ¥2,400 per working day, furnished accommodation, one direct round-trip air ticket near the placement dates, a shuttle pass and immigration/registration support.

The allowance is per working day, not every calendar day. The current relocation guidance describes internship days as Monday through Friday excluding Japanese national holidays and says the allowance is paid after the month in which the work occurs. Plan for upfront cash even when housing and travel are supported.

Final application check

Before paying and submitting, confirm that your dates cover at least 120 days inside April 1–September 30, your academic stage is eligible at the proposed start, your home institution has approved the placement if you are enrolled, and the units you selected are available in the current Spring 2027 column.

Confirm at least one eligible recommendation has arrived, open every uploaded PDF, check both Statement of Purpose limits, confirm passport or ID and photo requirements, and recheck the live deadline and ¥5,000 fee immediately before submission.

If you complete the internship, the strongest later signal is the work itself: methods you actually used, how you handled uncertainty, and any artifact or result you are allowed to discuss. OIST does not promise that every intern publishes or that the internship guarantees PhD admission.
