The program name changes the financial decision.
The SEC’s student-program overview describes paid Pathways opportunities. Its more recent Scholars page, updated July 27, 2026, explicitly describes Scholars as unpaid. These are separate routes. A search result that says “SEC internship” is not enough to establish compensation.
| Question | SEC Scholars | SEC Pathways |
|---|---|---|
| Compensation | Currently unpaid | Paid route in the student-program overview; rate requires a posting |
| Eligibility | U.S. citizen; current accredited degree/certificate student; cumulative GPA at least 2.5 | Check the specific announcement; do not import Scholars requirements |
| Commitment | Ten weeks; at least 16 hours on-site each week | Posting-specific |
| Permanent conversion | Not eligible through Scholars | Read the actual appointment and conversion conditions |
| Application route | USAJOBS during the posted window | Separate USAJOBS opportunities |
Spring 2027 is a start period, not an application deadline.
The Scholars page’s tentative Spring 2027 schedule lists July 23–August 27, 2026 for applications and January 25 or February 8, 2027 for entry. On this review date, the stated application deadline had passed. The page does not establish a Summer 2027 deadline. The SEC says it cannot accept late or emailed applications outside USAJOBS.

Choose the work and location before writing your interest statement.
A useful interest statement starts with a task you want to learn. You might want to compare financial information, investigate inconsistencies in records, support a technical process or explain a complex issue clearly. Find that task in the actual announcement. Do not assume that every office offers the same work because the organization’s mission is shared.
For a business-oriented application, identify one project showing how you handled evidence. A budgeting role, data assignment or operational job can be relevant when you can explain the method and its limits. For a legal application, follow the announcement’s academic and writing requirements rather than adapting a business application mechanically. The current posting determines which kind of evidence is useful.
Location is a substantive choice. Compare the office’s actual assignment, required presence and your available dates. An exciting role you cannot attend is not a viable option. Make those checks before spending hours polishing a cover letter, and keep each application tied to the office you selected.
Make the unpaid commitment visible in the comparison.
Original planning example: a student can attend a fictional unpaid placement for 16 hours a week over ten weeks. Travel adds four hours weekly. Direct transport and meals cost $50 each week. This arrangement uses 200 hours including travel and requires $500 in direct cash outlay, before any change in housing. These are invented costs, not SEC expense estimates.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| On-site time | 16 × 10 | 160 hours |
| Travel time | 4 × 10 | 40 hours |
| Direct cash costs | $50 × 10 | $500 |
| Alternative gross earnings, if available | $18 × 16 × 10 | $2,880 |
If the student would otherwise work 16 of those weekly hours at $18 per hour, forgone gross earnings would be $2,880. Direct costs plus those hypothetical forgone earnings equal $3,380. Keep this economic comparison separate from cash needed: forgone earnings are not a bill payable to the program. The calculation also assumes the alternative work actually exists and can be scheduled in the same hours.
A student could reasonably value the learning enough to accept, or conclude that a paid role is necessary. A sensible comparison names the supervisor, work product and feedback that make the opportunity worth considering. It does not assume a future job offer will repay the cost. Check whether an independent university grant is available, but do not count one before it is awarded.
A paid role with less recognizable branding may offer more responsibility or fit the budget better. Compare the actual task and supervision, not just the name. The point of the exercise is to expose the trade-off early enough that you still have alternatives.
Prepare the next application without reviving an expired one.
For the next valid announcement, prepare a transcript and enrollment record that show the status requested by the employer. Keep the selected office, application number and confirmation together. A general folder labeled SEC applications makes it too easy to lose which location or program you actually submitted to.
SEC route decision record
Use the period before an opening to select relevant evidence and settle your financial constraints. An application should not depend on a last-minute decision about whether unpaid work is feasible. Identify an alternative paid route where needed and check its own announcement. Do not assume that another program shares Scholars’ criteria or timetable.
