Check the central guidance and the actual office notice.

UNHCR’s central program text was available through its official indexed result after direct retrieval returned a rate-limit error. That retrieval limit matters: this guide is not verification that a particular vacancy remains open. An Italian regional page also carries different recent-graduate and allowance wording, so an applicant should not mix those editions.

Choose the contribution you can make responsibly.

Read the advertised task before assuming that every humanitarian internship involves direct service. A role might require careful records, a written summary, planning support or a communication product. Identify what the office needs and which of your experiences demonstrates that work. Genuine interest matters, but it is not a substitute for the requested skill.

A relevant example can come from a student group, job or course. Explain how you kept a record accurate, handled an ambiguous request or wrote for a reader with limited time. Do not disclose private information to make the example sound more serious. An appropriately anonymized description or a separate synthetic exercise can show the method without exposing people.

Use precise boundaries in your application. Preparing a background note is different from making a legal determination. Translating a classroom text is different from being qualified to interpret in a high-stakes setting. Describe your actual competence and the supervision you would need.

Do not convert repeated service visits into distinct people.

This original fictional exercise uses no real client records. A support desk logs 180 visits during a month. Stable fictional identifiers account for 150 visits involving 100 distinct people. Thirty visits have unresolved identifiers. What should a summary report say?

The desk recorded 180 visits, and the identified subset contains 100 distinct people. The overall number of distinct people is not exactly established. If all 30 unresolved visits are repeats of those 100, the total remains 100. If each is a different new person, it is 130. Under those stated assumptions, 100–130 is a logical range, not a sampled estimate or confidence interval.

The wrong fix is to assign invented identities merely to produce one clean total. Instead, preserve the unresolved records and document how they affect the result. A follow-up may clarify identity through an authorized process, but the analyst cannot infer sensitive personal facts from convenience.

Draft a short note for a manager containing the visit count, known distinct count and unresolved portion. Recommend what evidence is needed next and who is authorized to obtain it. This demonstrates disciplined reporting without turning a fictional spreadsheet into a claim about real humanitarian outcomes.

Ask for a written amount rather than calculating your own entitlement.

An allowance formula is not a personalized offer. Request the applicable rate, currency, payment timing and treatment of outside support for the actual placement. Keep travel authorization and reimbursement separate from ordinary living costs. A potential repayment after travel does not eliminate the need for money before departure.

Compare the proposed dates with any previous internship at the organization. Cumulative limits cannot be checked from the new placement alone. Prepare a record of earlier start/end dates and whether the work was full- or part-time; ask the recruiter to apply the rule rather than inventing your own conversion between the two formats.

Resolve an apparent regional-versus-central conflict using the exact notice and recruiting contact. Retain the answer and source date. A newer-looking webpage is not, by itself, proof that every local condition has been replaced, and a regional page is not automatically the rule for all offices.

Submit a role-specific account of your preparation.

Write a short explanation of the task you want to support and one piece of evidence that makes you ready. Keep language levels and academic dates consistent across the form and resume. Do not assume that a broad program invitation removes an office-specific language or location condition.

Before accepting, confirm supervision, schedule and a useful learning objective. A successful placement should leave you with stronger judgment and work you can describe accurately. It does not need to become a public portfolio of confidential materials. Plan to record methods, feedback and your contribution without retaining data you are not permitted to keep.
