Read the circuit scope before the tool list
A description that names SPICE is not enough to tell you what the job teaches. Find the circuit being designed and the quantities that determine success: gain, bandwidth, noise, power, area, or settling. NVIDIA's hiring-area reference separates mixed-signal design from physical and digital design. Use that distinction to avoid combining unrelated roles in one application pitch.
Choose one project you can explain from specification to result. State what you designed yourself, what came from a course scaffold, and which device models you used. A carefully documented simulation is useful evidence; claiming tape-out experience when you only ran a tutorial is not.

Build a small amplifier study with a real design decision
For a preparation project, simulate a low-voltage amplifier using an openly available model and a tool you are permitted to use. Write a modest specification before adjusting transistor sizes. Compare two design choices, then show how a change that improves one metric harms another. Include one result that failed your original requirement and explain the revision. This is a self-directed exercise, not an employer assignment.
- Provide the schematic, assumptions, operating point, and reproducible simulation instructions.
- Plot the relevant response and test sensitivity to supply or load changes within the model's valid range.
- End with a one-page design review: what passed, what failed, and what would require measurement on real hardware.
Make the interview about reasoning, not screenshots
Prepare to explain why the circuit behaves as it does without opening the simulator. Rehearse your assumptions, the dominant limitation, and the next measurement you would request. On your resume, name the block and the trade-off you investigated rather than listing every simulator menu you used.
- Ask whether interns change circuit topology or mainly execute an established verification plan.
- Ask who reviews the design and whether the placement includes exposure to layout or silicon results.
- Keep an accessible PDF summary alongside the repository so a reviewer can understand the work without installing your toolchain.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Use transistor-level coursework and a circuit project as your fit test. Check each posting's degree level and required courses; do not assume all analog teams require a master's degree.
- Timing
- Synopsys describes summer internships and longer placements. Record the actual requisition's closing date and start date separately; a general recruiting season is not an application deadline.
- Location
- Ask whether the work is simulation-led, tied to a characterization lab, or split between them. Verify the team's office rather than assuming the company's headquarters is the internship site.
- Pay
- Request the rate for your degree level, expected weekly hours, and relocation terms. Do not annualize a short internship and present that number as a graduate salary.

Job titles to search
- Analog or mixed-signal design intern
- Look for ownership of a circuit block, its specification, and simulation results.
- Analog validation intern
- Look for bench measurements and comparison of real devices against design expectations.
- Analog layout intern
- Look for transistor placement, matching, routing, and checks against the circuit design.
Where to look
Search routes, not confirmed vacancies.
Synopsys early careers
Use Synopsys's student route, then narrow by analog and mixed-signal terms. Exclude senior design positions even when their technical descriptions look relevant.

NVIDIA university recruiting
NVIDIA's university page provides the student application route. Search by circuit function as well as internship title; distinguish interface circuitry from general GPU software work.

Compare the work and try an example
Use a role comparison or worked exercise to choose your preparation before tailoring an application.
