Separate the measurement from the pass-or-fail decision
A convincing test-engineering portfolio explains what was measured, how trustworthy the measurement is, and how a limit was chosen. A script that prints PASS is not enough. Describe the unit, reference condition, measurement resolution, and what happens when the instrument or input is unavailable.
When reading vacancies, distinguish engineering development from repetitive execution of a fixed procedure. Both can teach useful skills, but they provide different evidence for a later design or automation role. Ask what an intern will change and how the team will judge whether that change improved the process.
Build a fault-tolerant measurement harness without expensive equipment
Write a small program that reads a simulated instrument response, validates units and ranges, and stores a timestamped result with its configuration. Add timeouts, malformed responses, and missing readings. Separate a failed measurement from a device that genuinely failed a specification. A simulator makes the project reproducible and avoids claiming access to equipment you did not use.
- Keep raw observations alongside derived statistics so a reviewer can trace each conclusion.
- Test retries without duplicating records or silently replacing a failed reading with zero.
- Report uncertainty or repeatability where appropriate and explain what your simulator cannot establish about real hardware.
Present a debugging record that another engineer could use
Choose one failure and show the diagnostic sequence. Was the apparent defect caused by the device model, a unit conversion, a timing assumption, or the data pipeline? Include a minimal reproduction and the regression that prevents recurrence. This is stronger than a broad claim that you automated testing without saying what became more reliable.
- Ask which measurements or product families are in scope for the internship.
- Ask whether you will write test code, design experiments, analyze results, or maintain equipment.
- Confirm how results are reviewed before they affect a production or customer-facing decision.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Connect circuits or device coursework with a reproducible measurement or data-analysis project. Check whether the role expects instrument experience, programming, statistics, or a particular degree level.
- Timing
- Keysight's student page describes placements of at least ten consecutive weeks. Verify the requisition's start date and duration; this program-level statement is not a company-wide application deadline.
- Location
- Determine where the relevant instruments or hardware are located. Ask whether the work is a development-lab project, manufacturing support, or customer-facing applications work.
- Pay
- Compare the stated rate with the actual hours and location. Ask about overtime or shift expectations when mentioned in the posting, without assuming either applies to every test internship.

Job titles to search
- Product or semiconductor test intern
- Look for test development and a clear device acceptance or production objective.
- Silicon characterization intern
- Look for studying device behavior across operating conditions and interpreting results.
- Test automation intern
- Look for software controlling a measurement workflow, preserving data, and handling failures.
