Start with a process where the truth is known
For a small methods exercise, suppose you observe ten independent flips of a fair coin. The true heads probability is 0.5. You can evaluate an interval method without making any claim about a treatment or using patient data.
Consider the ordinary normal-approximation, or Wald, interval: observed proportion plus or minus 1.96 times the square root of [observed proportion × (1 − observed proportion) ÷ 10]. Calling it nominally 95% does not establish its actual coverage for every sample size and probability.
A nominal 95% method with 89.1% coverage
With five heads, the estimate is 0.5 and the interval is approximately 0.190–0.810, which contains the true 0.5. With two heads, it is approximately −0.048–0.448, which misses 0.5. With no heads, the estimated standard error is zero and this formula returns [0, 0].
For this exact fair-coin example, the interval contains 0.5 only when the number of heads is three through seven. Those outcomes account for 912 of the 1,024 equally likely ordered sequences of ten flips: 912 ÷ 1,024 = 89.0625%. This is an exact calculation under the stated model, not a simulated clinical result.
- Coverage describes how often the procedure includes the fixed target across repeated samples. It is not a probability assigned to the target after inspecting one interval.
- The failure is specific to this approximation in this small-sample setting. It does not show that every 95% interval method has 89.1% coverage.
- A simulation could reproduce the result approximately, but its output would have simulation error. Keep that separate from the exact calculation.
Make one table reproducible and explain the failure
A complete sample can enumerate heads counts zero through ten, calculate each interval, mark whether it contains 0.5 and weight the result by its fair-coin probability. Include the formula and a check that the probabilities sum to one. For a programming role, the transparent output and tests are the contribution; for a methods role, explain the approximation's weakness and investigate a justified alternative.
A precise project description would be: 'Enumerated a known binomial example and found that a nominal 95% Wald interval achieved 89.1% coverage under the specified conditions.' Do not claim that this is evidence about a real study or that you developed a new interval method. In an interview, be ready to distinguish the known parameter, the estimate and repeated-sample performance.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- A broad student program accepting several degree levels does not establish undergraduate eligibility for each methods-research vacancy. Use the academic requirement on the actual statistics or programming listing.
- Timing
- Merck's recurring student route begins posting roles in early September, with further roles possible in fall and winter. Amgen has separate internship and cooperative-education routes.
- Location
- Find out whether the work is methods development, applied analysis or production programming. The distinction affects the sample you should submit more than the employer's industry label does.
- Pay
- Compare roles at the same degree level and duration. A doctoral methods internship's compensation is not a defensible estimate for an undergraduate programming position.

Job titles to search
- Biostatistics research intern
- Investigate a method or applied statistical question and explain why the approach fits.
- Statistical programming intern
- Produce reproducible inputs, outputs and independent checks for a specified analysis.
- Biometrics intern
- Read the duties: this label can cover different combinations of statistics, programming and data work.
Where to look
Search routes, not confirmed vacancies.
Merck student opportunities
Search the student listings for the actual statistical function and degree level rather than assuming every research-division role is interchangeable.
Search: biostatistics · statistical programming · biometrics intern
Amgen students and graduates
Use the internship route, not an unrelated graduate fellowship. Choose a research or programming sample to match the duties.

Compare the work and try an example
Use a role comparison or worked exercise to choose your preparation before tailoring an application.
