Healthcare analytics internships: a better rate can hide behind a worse headline

A healthcare analyst may study appointment operations, service access, costs or data quality rather than predict a clinical outcome. Search for the decision you want to support. A strong student sample defines the population and denominator, then shows whether an apparent trend survives a closer comparison.

Compare like with like before explaining a decline

Suppose an appointment-completion dashboard falls sharply. Before blaming a scheduling change, ask whether the mix of appointments changed. The following fictional example has complete status information, no exclusions and two appointment types. It concerns administrative completion, not clinical quality.

Keep the type-level counts as well as the headline rate. A percentage without its numerator, denominator and inclusion rules gives the next analyst little chance of checking the explanation.

Both types improve while the total rate falls

Each period contains 120 appointments, but the mix changes.

  • Period 1: routine appointments complete 90 of 100, or 90%; longer appointments complete 10 of 20, or 50%. Total: 100 of 120 = 83.3%, rounded.
  • Period 2: routine appointments complete 19 of 20, or 95%; longer appointments complete 60 of 100, or 60%. Total: 79 of 120 = 65.8%, rounded.
  • Routine completion improves five percentage points and longer-appointment completion improves ten. Yet the overall rate falls 17.5 percentage points because the lower-completion type now makes up much more of the total.

Write the interpretation the headline leaves out

A useful note is: 'The aggregate completion rate fell, but completion improved within both appointment types. The mix shifted toward longer appointments. The overall rate therefore does not, by itself, establish that either type's process worsened.' This is a description of the data, not proof that a particular change caused the within-type improvements.

For an additional comparison, give both types equal weight in both periods: period 1 is (90% + 50%) ÷ 2 = 70%; period 2 is (95% + 60%) ÷ 2 = 77.5%. Label these as rates standardized to an invented 50/50 mix, not the actual overall rates.

Build a small spreadsheet with raw counts, calculated rates and that explanation. Add a data dictionary specifying what completed means. An application can then describe a metric you corrected, not merely a dashboard you made. Use synthetic or properly permitted public data; private records are unnecessary for demonstrating this skill.

Before you apply

Eligibility
UnitedHealth Group offers several student and early-career routes. Match the particular analytics role's degree and experience requirements rather than assuming every data-science role has the same entry criteria.
Timing
UnitedHealth Group says most student and early-career roles post in fall and recruiting continues into spring. Its page names typical September–November and January–March recruiting periods, not one deadline for all analytics roles.
Location
Use the named business unit and work arrangement. A job at a nationwide organization is not automatically available remotely from every state.
Pay
Use the selected internship's compensation and hours. A graduate technology-development salary is not an internship pay estimate.
