Computational chemistry internships: research, software or applications?

Search computational chemistry, molecular modeling, scientific software and cheminformatics separately. A methods-research internship and a software-engineering internship can use the same tools while expecting different contributions. Show the part you understand and can test, not only an attractive result from a tutorial.

State which contribution is yours

A modeling sample should identify the scientific question and assumptions. A software sample should identify the implemented behavior and tests. A methods sample should explain the proposed comparison. Using an established package is legitimate; label what the package did and what you added.

For a beginner sample, a small permitted educational calculation is enough. Keep inputs, settings, versions and units with the output. Avoid a large proprietary installation that a reviewer needs merely to discover your conclusion.

Two numbers that describe the same energy gap

Consider two fictional configurations of an unspecified educational model. Method A reports relative energies of 0 and 1.000 thermochemical kcal/mol. Method B reports 0 and 4.184 kJ/mol. Under the stated conversion, 1 thermochemical kcal equals 4.184 kJ, so both report the same relative gap. Method B's larger displayed number does not show a stronger preference.

Before comparing, confirm that both reports use the same reference configuration and describe the same quantity. Two methods can choose different zero points; an absolute number from one cannot be subtracted from another without a justified common basis. A numerical solver reaching its stopping criterion also does not establish that the model answers the scientific question.

  • Keep each original energy and unit, then calculate a normalized value in a separate column.
  • Record the reference configuration and settings used for the comparison.
  • If a comparison changes after a setting is changed, explain whether the change concerns numerical precision, model choice or a different input rather than simply selecting the preferred result.

Make the comparison easy to reproduce

A short report can contain the question, two input configurations, the outputs with units, the conversion and a limitation. A software-oriented sample could test that equivalent inputs expressed in the two units give equivalent normalized results, while unknown units produce an explicit error.

An application statement could say: 'Built a reproducible educational comparison that retained input settings and normalized energy units before interpreting the difference.' Replace the invented example with your own work and explain any method you claim to know. An energy score alone is not evidence that a substance is safe or effective for people.

Ask whether the internship's main output is a research result, a software contribution or an applications report. That answer tells you whether to spend preparation time on scientific reasoning, code tests or explaining a user's workflow.

Before you apply

Eligibility
Read the role's research and degree requirements directly. A scientific-software internship and a doctoral computational-chemistry project can need different evidence even when both involve molecular modeling.
Timing
Merck has a recurring student route. Schrödinger's careers page is a place to look for relevant roles, not evidence of an open internship or a fixed annual internship schedule.
Location
Use the actual research or software team's work arrangement. Ask which licensed tools and compute resources the employer supplies before spending money on preparation.
Pay
Use a current role's compensation and academic level. Historical rates for a doctoral scientific internship are not a reliable undergraduate software-intern estimate.
