Give the reviewer something appropriate to the track
For product security, use an application you own: describe one misuse case, the defensive rule and a test of that rule. For controls, use a fictional access register and show which accounts lack an owner or an approval. For detection, evaluate a rule against both concerning and ordinary events.
Keep a portfolio exercise local or within an explicitly authorized environment. Synthetic records are enough for the detection example here. No real credentials, external scanning or live intrusion is needed to demonstrate the reasoning.
Catching more suspicious cases can create an unmanageable queue
Invent 100 labeled observation windows: four suspicious test cases and 96 benign ones. Two hypothetical rules produce the results below. Each label is known because you designed the exercise, not because a real investigation confirmed a compromise.
| Measure | Broad rule | Narrow rule |
|---|---|---|
| Suspicious cases flagged | 3 of 4 | 2 of 4 |
| Benign cases flagged | 12 of 96 | 2 of 96 |
| Total alerts | 15 | 4 |
| Alerts that match a suspicious test case | 3 ÷ 15 = 20% | 2 ÷ 4 = 50% |
| Suspicious cases missed | 1 | 2 |
- The broad rule catches 75% of the suspicious cases, but 12 of its 15 alerts are benign. A detection rate alone hides the review workload.
- With time to review only five alerts, the broad queue cannot be fully investigated. That does not prove the narrow rule is better: it misses an additional suspicious case.
- A sensible comparison considers case severity, review time and the cost of missing an event. The table supplies none of those values, so it does not justify automatic account blocking.
Write an analyst note that does not overclaim
Build a small labeled event file and a local rule evaluator. Include ordinary counterexamples and keep a separate set of cases you did not use to tune the rule. Report which cases changed when you tightened it, not merely that the alert count fell.
A useful note reads: “This window matched the test rule. The available records do not establish compromise. I would check the relevant access and activity context with the supervising analyst before escalating.” Then name the specific observation and the authorized evidence needed. A vague warning with no next question is not an investigation.
In applications, distinguish a synthetic detection study from incident-response experience. Ask the hiring team whether the intern writes defensive software, investigates events or assembles control evidence. Choose the project that demonstrates that work.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Match the required programming, networking or controls knowledge. Check the specific degree and authorization conditions.
- Timing
- Use the actual student requisition. An early-talent announcement does not establish a security-team deadline.
- Location
- Ask which systems interns can access, who supervises that access and whether the work includes scheduled shifts.
- Pay
- Compare the internship’s stated hours and rate, not an experienced security engineer’s salary.
Job titles to search
- Product security intern
- Review a design or code path and test a defensive improvement.
- Detection and response intern
- Investigate events and decide which evidence warrants escalation.
- Security operations or controls intern
- Review access, assets or evidence that a control is working.
