Choose a question a small session can answer
For a harmless prototype, ask whether a person can find and reserve a study room for a stated time. Give the goal without naming the button or path you hope they will use. “Reserve a room for two people tomorrow at 2 p.m.” tests the flow; “click Book a room” supplies part of the answer.
Recruit consenting adults, explain the purpose and what you will record, and use fictional booking information. Do not ask participants to expose passwords or private account contents. Record when the moderator intervenes so assisted completion does not become indistinguishable from independent success.
Four completed bookings can conceal three usability problems
These are invented notes from five sessions, not a study that was actually conducted. The timeout is part of the fictional session plan.
| Participant | Outcome | Recorded time |
|---|---|---|
| P1 | Completed without a hint | 45 seconds |
| P2 | Completed after a hint | 90 seconds |
| P3 | Not completed; session stopped | 120 seconds |
| P4 | Completed without a hint | 70 seconds |
| P5 | Completed after a hint | 85 seconds |
- Two people completed without help, two completed with help and one did not complete. Reporting only four of five “successful” bookings hides the moderator’s contribution.
- The 120-second stopped attempt is not a completed-task duration. Keep it identified as a timeout rather than blending it into an average time to successful completion.
- Five conveniently recruited participants can expose problems worth investigating. These counts do not estimate the completion rate of the entire user population.
Show the recommendation and its limits
For each difficulty, preserve the observation before interpreting it: where the person looked, what they tried and when a hint was given. “Could not identify which rooms were available” is a hypothesis to investigate; connect it to the actual behavior rather than substituting your preferred redesign.
Recommend a focused revision and test it. Bringing back the same participants introduces prior experience with the task, so faster completion afterward does not by itself prove the new design caused the improvement. Use new participants when appropriate or describe that limitation explicitly.
A useful portfolio contains the question, recruitment limits, neutral task, outcome definitions, key observations and a recommendation tied to them. Share participant material only with the appropriate permission and remove identifying details. Ask an internship interviewer who reviews study design and whether the assignment includes participant research, existing-data analysis or research operations.
Before you apply
- Eligibility
- Read the required methods and degree level. Research, mixed-methods and product-design internships can expect different portfolios.
- Timing
- Spotify’s student page currently marks Summer 2026 applications closed. That is not a deadline or opening announcement for a future UX cohort.
- Location
- Check the employment location separately from how participant sessions are conducted.
- Pay
- Use the actual role’s compensation and term. Discuss research expenses through the employer’s process.
