Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Represent exams precisely as passed, scheduled or in preparation. Do not infer a universal requirement from one employer’s posting. An actuarial internship should be distinguished from general insurance sales, even when both mention risk and financial planning.
Application decision: Role routes · What to use: Actuarial, pricing and insurance analytics; Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling; Underwriting, claims and risk services; Corporate finance and investment analysis
Application decision: Relevant coursework · What to use: probability, mathematical statistics, financial mathematics, programming and actuarial coursework.
Application decision: Employer entry points · What to use: UnitedHealth Group early careers; Walmart student opportunities
Build this work sample
Create synthetic policy and claims data with exposure periods. Estimate frequency and severity separately, examine a large-loss scenario and explain how a small sample changes confidence in the result. Compare two reasonable modeling assumptions and show which has the larger effect. Write a short note for a nontechnical reader explaining what cannot be concluded.
A test that makes the sample credible
Give two policy groups different exposure periods before comparing claim counts. Then add a single large claim and show how much it changes the severity estimate. Submit the calculation and a plain-language explanation of why a small sample does not support a precise pricing conclusion.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.
Read the work behind the title
Actuarial, pricing and insurance analytics
Actuarial work applies probability, financial reasoning and data analysis to uncertain future costs. Pricing, reserving, retirement and risk work do not use identical datasets or business questions. Search actuarial intern as well as pricing analyst, risk analyst and insurance analytics, then check whether the posting specifies exams or particular coursework. The BLS actuary profile describes the occupation and its examination-based development; it does not establish a universal exam threshold for interns.
Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.
Underwriting, claims and risk services
Insurance underwriting evaluates which risks to accept and on what terms; claims work investigates and resolves losses after an insured event. Brokerage, carrier operations and actuarial analysis are adjacent but different. Search underwriting intern, claims intern, risk control, insurance operations and brokerage internship as separate routes. The BLS underwriting guide supplies occupational background; it should not be read as a promise that students make independent coverage decisions.
Corporate finance and investment analysis
Corporate finance asks how a business performs and how it should allocate resources. Investment analysis asks what an asset may be worth, what can go wrong and whether the expected return compensates for that risk. A company’s planning team, a lender and an investment manager may all advertise an “analyst” internship while evaluating very different decisions. The BLS financial analyst profile is useful occupational background, not evidence that an internship accepts every business major.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Actuarial Science is a direct route into actuarial recruiting, but exam progress is only part of the evidence. Employers also need accurate data handling, financial reasoning and communication. Decide which practice areas interest you and learn the underlying liabilities. A life-insurance projection, property-loss estimate and retirement analysis are not interchangeable applications of the same spreadsheet.
