Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Research exposure, clinical exposure and patient-care experience are not interchangeable. Verify how a placement fits any professional-school requirement with that school. Do not perform unsupervised biological experiments or present a course project as independent laboratory research.
Application decision: Role routes · What to use: Laboratory research and experimental support; Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling; Environmental analysis, compliance support and sustainability; Health administration and healthcare operations
Application decision: Relevant coursework · What to use: cell biology, genetics, ecology, statistics and supervised laboratory methods.
Application decision: Employer entry points · What to use: NSF REU information for students; Smithsonian Environmental Research Center eligibility
Build this work sample
Analyze a public ecological or biological dataset with a reproducible workflow. Define the unit of observation, check missing values and explain whether repeated measurements are independent. Produce one figure that answers a narrow question and a second that exposes a limitation. Add a proposed follow-up experiment, clearly separating what the data show from what would still need testing.
A test that makes the sample credible
Revisit a result after introducing a plausible alternative explanation. Keep the original observations and record why the interpretation changed. Distinguish techniques you performed from techniques you only studied, so the portfolio makes the depth of your laboratory or analytical experience clear.

Laboratory research and experimental support
Laboratory internships can support experimental preparation, measurement, data recording, sample tracking and analysis. Search research assistant, laboratory intern, research experience, biological technician and the specific scientific topic you have studied. The BLS biological technician profile describes one undergraduate-accessible occupational route; it does not mean every research scientist internship accepts bachelor’s students.
Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.
Environmental analysis, compliance support and sustainability
Environmental internships can involve field sampling, data analysis, permitting support, laboratory work or corporate sustainability. These paths should not be collapsed into a generic “green job” category. Search environmental intern, environmental scientist, water resources, environmental health and safety, and sustainability analyst. The BLS environmental scientist profile provides occupational context; particular field and regulatory duties require employer-specific training and supervision.
Health administration and healthcare operations
Healthcare operations includes scheduling, patient access, supply coordination, reporting, quality improvement and administrative processes. It is distinct from clinical practice. Search healthcare administration intern, health operations, patient access analytics, quality improvement and health services research. The BLS health services manager profile is background on organizational responsibilities, not evidence that an undergraduate intern manages clinical services.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Biology students should decide whether they want to generate experimental evidence, work with biological data or support an organization applying science. A laboratory assistant, environmental field intern and clinical-research operations intern may all recruit biology students while providing very different experience. For your first placement, prioritize a defined question, suitable supervision and methods you can learn within the available time. A prestigious laboratory is not automatically a better learning environment than a smaller team that gives you a coherent project.
