Build this work sample

Use a synthetic order table and customer table to investigate late deliveries. Define an order, explain how you handle partial shipments and test for duplicate joins. Compare average delay with the share of orders exceeding a meaningful threshold. Recommend one operational change and state what additional information would be needed before implementation. Include an error report, not just a dashboard.

A test that makes the sample credible

Deliberately insert a duplicate customer key and one partly fulfilled order. Your checks should catch both before the dashboard is produced. Show the reconciled order count next to the exception count, then explain whether the recommended delivery change still makes sense after those records are treated correctly.

Business analytics and decision support

Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.

Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling

Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.

Information systems and enterprise technology

Information systems work connects a business process with the software and data needed to run it. This can include requirements, enterprise application configuration, implementation testing and reporting. Search systems analyst, business systems, enterprise applications, implementation and IT analyst internships. The BLS computer systems analyst profile explains the bridge between organizational needs and technical systems.

Operations improvement and service delivery

Operations work concerns the movement of work through a real system: orders, people, machines, cases or appointments. Search operations intern, process improvement, service operations, continuous improvement and planning analyst. The BLS operations research guide describes one analytical route; many practical operations internships rely more on observation, spreadsheet analysis and implementation than on advanced optimization.

Background

Business analytics sits between a business question and the data needed to answer it. The degree is strongest when you can show both sides. Employers need more than familiarity with a dashboard tool: they need someone who can define a measure, check the data and explain an action. Separate business intelligence, operations analysis and data science in your search. They overlap, but a reporting internship and a modeling internship can require very different preparation.
