Computer Science offers more routes than a single software-engineering track. Product development, enterprise systems, security, data and research support can each use the degree. Choose a primary function and make your evidence match it. A candidate with one reliable project and a clear debugging story is easier to assess than one who lists many languages but cannot explain a substantial piece of work.
Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Graduate research, undergraduate software development and internal IT are different recruiting routes. Check the degree level and duties. Do not assume that a well-known technology employer uses the same assessment format for every role or country.

Build this work sample
Build a small application around a real user task and document the design decisions. Add a persistent data model, meaningful tests and an example of a failure you investigated. Explain the trade-off between a simple implementation and an alternative you rejected. Include setup instructions that another student can follow without your help, and remove all secrets or private data.
A test that makes the sample credible
Make the project reproducible from a clean checkout. Record one failure, the test that exposed it and the design change that fixed it. A reviewer should be able to distinguish working functionality from planned features without needing a verbal tour of the repository.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Software development, testing and technical implementation
Software internships can involve product features, internal tools, test automation, integrations or infrastructure. Search beyond the largest consumer platforms: employers in manufacturing, finance, healthcare and retail also maintain software teams. The BLS software development and quality assurance profile describes these occupational functions, not a single standardized internship curriculum.
Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.
Cybersecurity, controls and defensive analysis
Security work is not limited to penetration testing. Defensive monitoring, identity and access management, governance, incident documentation and security engineering are distinct routes. Search security analyst intern, security operations, identity, technology risk and security assurance. The BLS information security analyst profile is occupational context; some internships require prior systems knowledge even when they accept undergraduates.
Information systems and enterprise technology
Information systems work connects a business process with the software and data needed to run it. This can include requirements, enterprise application configuration, implementation testing and reporting. Search systems analyst, business systems, enterprise applications, implementation and IT analyst internships. The BLS computer systems analyst profile explains the bridge between organizational needs and technical systems.
