Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Search research assistant and economic analysis separately from economist. Check whether a role expects graduate econometrics, a specific programming language or an undergraduate graduation window. Do not describe an observational classroom analysis as proof of a policy’s effect.

Build this work sample
Study a public dataset with a clear question about prices, employment or demand. Produce descriptive results before fitting a model. Explain what could confound your interpretation and why a correlation is not necessarily causal. Add a sensitivity check using a different time window or subgroup. The finished output should include a reproducible script and a two-page memo written for a reader who does not know econometrics.
A test that makes the sample credible
Run the same estimate after excluding one unusual period. If the sign changes, put that instability in the memo rather than burying it in an appendix. Deliver the raw-data citation, cleaning script and a table that lets a reader separate the descriptive result from the causal interpretation you have not established.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Business analytics and decision support
Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.
Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.
Corporate finance and investment analysis
Corporate finance asks how a business performs and how it should allocate resources. Investment analysis asks what an asset may be worth, what can go wrong and whether the expected return compensates for that risk. A company’s planning team, a lender and an investment manager may all advertise an “analyst” internship while evaluating very different decisions. The BLS financial analyst profile is useful occupational background, not evidence that an internship accepts every business major.
Public policy, government and regulatory research
Policy internships can involve legislative research, program analysis, stakeholder correspondence, public records and administrative work. The employer might be a public agency, legislative office, research organization or a company’s policy team. The BLS political scientist profile describes a research occupation that often requires advanced study; undergraduate policy internships are a separate route and should be evaluated on their own requirements.

Background
Economics is most useful in recruiting when you connect a model to evidence. Corporate analytics, economic research, policy work and financial analysis offer different ways to do that. Some professional economist roles require graduate study, but that does not eliminate undergraduate research-assistant or analyst pathways. Show what you can do now: clean data, understand incentives, compare explanations and state the limitations of an estimate. A transcript alone does not tell an employer whether you can move from theory to a usable result.
