Build this work sample
Create an editorial package for a fictional nonfiction article: a short pitch, a sourced draft, a revised version and an editor’s note explaining the changes. Separate factual verification from stylistic preference. Include a headline and summary suited to the intended audience without exaggerating the evidence or inventing publication credits.
A test that makes the sample credible
Revise one piece for two different readers and explain the changes in structure, evidence and tone. Keep the original and edited versions together. A strong sample shows why a sentence or section was cut; it does not rely on a general claim that you are a good communicator.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.
Read the work behind the title
Writing, editing and communications
Writing and communications internships can involve editorial research, technical explanation, internal communication, copywriting or content operations. Search editorial intern, communications intern, content strategy, technical writing and copywriting separately. The BLS writers and authors profile supplies occupational background; a portfolio and the employer’s actual work often matter more than the broad title.
Journalism, production and media operations
Media work includes reporting, research, production coordination, editing, audience development and distribution. A newsroom, studio and platform do not offer the same type of internship. Search reporting intern, editorial research, production intern, post-production and audience development. The BLS news analyst and journalist profile describes the reporting occupation; production and commercial roles have distinct responsibilities.
Public relations and stakeholder communication
Public relations work concerns how an organization communicates with external audiences and responds to questions or scrutiny. It differs from buying advertising or simply posting on social media. Search public relations intern, corporate communications, public affairs, media relations and communications agency. The BLS public relations specialist profile provides occupational context for these responsibilities.
Marketing, consumer research and growth analysis
Marketing internships differ sharply between market research, brand work, performance channels, lifecycle communication and sales support. Search the function, not just “marketing.” The BLS market research analyst profile provides background on understanding customers and evaluating markets, but does not imply that every marketing position is an analytical research role.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
English students should show what their writing does for a reader. Editorial, communications, publishing and content research use overlapping skills but different standards. A polished essay is useful evidence, yet a hiring team may need a shorter brief, an edited passage or a clear explanation of a technical subject. Build a portfolio around purpose and revision rather than length or literary ambition alone.
