Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Game-related internships are not all creative design roles. Quality assurance, production support and analytics can be distinct routes. Clarify portfolio rights, working expectations and supervision, and do not use copyrighted assets without appropriate permission.

Build this work sample
Build a short playable experience with one clear mechanic and a complete start-to-finish loop. Observe a few permitted playtests, record where players become confused and revise one part of the design. Explain the intended experience, the constraints and your personal contribution. Include a bug list or design change log rather than only a trailer.
A test that makes the sample credible
Choose one short playable interaction and test what happens when the player does something unexpected. Record a design change prompted by the test. Separate the mechanics, assets and code you produced from team contributions, and keep unbuilt features out of the description of completed work.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Software development, testing and technical implementation
Software internships can involve product features, internal tools, test automation, integrations or infrastructure. Search beyond the largest consumer platforms: employers in manufacturing, finance, healthcare and retail also maintain software teams. The BLS software development and quality assurance profile describes these occupational functions, not a single standardized internship curriculum.
Visual communication and graphic design
Graphic design internships may focus on identity systems, marketing assets, publication design, digital production or internal communication. Search graphic design intern, visual design, brand design and production design. The BLS graphic designer profile describes the occupation; the employer’s portfolio expectations and tool requirements are specific to the role.
User experience, interaction design and product research
User experience work can involve research, interaction design, information architecture, usability testing or interface implementation. Search UX design intern, product design intern, interaction design, UX research and accessibility, then examine the duties. The BLS web development and digital design profile provides adjacent occupational context; specialized UX research internships may have their own degree requirements.
Journalism, production and media operations
Media work includes reporting, research, production coordination, editing, audience development and distribution. A newsroom, studio and platform do not offer the same type of internship. Search reporting intern, editorial research, production intern, post-production and audience development. The BLS news analyst and journalist profile describes the reporting occupation; production and commercial roles have distinct responsibilities.
Application and offer checks

Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Game Design and Development includes different professions: gameplay programming, systems design, art, tools, production and user research. A playable project should make your specific contribution clear. Do not apply to a programming role with only concept art, or to a design role with code whose player experience you have not considered. Small finished work is often easier to evaluate than a large unfinished game.
