Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Graphic design, product design and interface design overlap but are not interchangeable. Check whether the role expects print production, motion, web tools or research. Do not distribute licensed fonts or client source files in a public portfolio.

Build this work sample
Build a small visual system for a fictional event or publication. Apply it to three formats with different constraints and explain how hierarchy and accessibility change across them. Include production-ready files, a rationale and one rejected direction. Use assets you have rights to share and identify your own contribution clearly.
A test that makes the sample credible
Apply the design at a small size and in a constrained production format. Inspect hierarchy and readability, then show the revision. Include only assets and source files you are permitted to distribute; explain the visual choice without claiming an untested commercial result.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Visual communication and graphic design
Graphic design internships may focus on identity systems, marketing assets, publication design, digital production or internal communication. Search graphic design intern, visual design, brand design and production design. The BLS graphic designer profile describes the occupation; the employer’s portfolio expectations and tool requirements are specific to the role.
Industrial design and physical product development
Industrial design concerns how a physical product functions, feels, communicates and can be made. It overlaps with engineering but is not identical to mechanical analysis. Search industrial design intern, product design, design research and physical product development, checking whether “product design” refers to hardware or digital interfaces. The BLS industrial designer profile describes the physical-product occupation.
Marketing, consumer research and growth analysis
Marketing internships differ sharply between market research, brand work, performance channels, lifecycle communication and sales support. Search the function, not just “marketing.” The BLS market research analyst profile provides background on understanding customers and evaluating markets, but does not imply that every marketing position is an analytical research role.
Journalism, production and media operations
Media work includes reporting, research, production coordination, editing, audience development and distribution. A newsroom, studio and platform do not offer the same type of internship. Search reporting intern, editorial research, production intern, post-production and audience development. The BLS news analyst and journalist profile describes the reporting occupation; production and commercial roles have distinct responsibilities.

Background
Graphic Design internships can involve brand systems, editorial work, packaging or digital communication. A portfolio should reveal the design problem, not only the final image. Choose pieces showing hierarchy, typography, production awareness and revision under constraints. A visually attractive concept that cannot be reproduced or read at its intended size is not finished work.
