Build this work sample
Build a short digital exhibit or research memo around a small set of public-domain archival sources. Explain why each source was created, what it supports and what it leaves unresolved. Include an annotated chronology and a correction note for one misleading interpretation. Make the output accessible to someone who has not taken the course.
A test that makes the sample credible
Create a source chronology and note which account was produced closest to the event. Preserve an apparent contradiction instead of smoothing it away. The final explanation should make clear what comes from a primary record, what comes from later interpretation and what remains unresolved.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Writing, editing and communications
Writing and communications internships can involve editorial research, technical explanation, internal communication, copywriting or content operations. Search editorial intern, communications intern, content strategy, technical writing and copywriting separately. The BLS writers and authors profile supplies occupational background; a portfolio and the employer’s actual work often matter more than the broad title.
Public policy, government and regulatory research
Policy internships can involve legislative research, program analysis, stakeholder correspondence, public records and administrative work. The employer might be a public agency, legislative office, research organization or a company’s policy team. The BLS political scientist profile describes a research occupation that often requires advanced study; undergraduate policy internships are a separate route and should be evaluated on their own requirements.
Legal operations, compliance support and document research
Undergraduate legal-related work can include document organization, legal operations, compliance research and administrative support. It is not equivalent to practicing law or to a law-student summer associate position. Search legal intern with degree filters, legal operations, compliance intern, paralegal assistant and regulatory affairs support. The BLS paralegal and legal assistant profile provides context for supervised support work.
Social research, user insight and evaluation
Social research skills can support evaluation, customer insight, community research and organizational studies. Search research assistant, qualitative research, evaluation, insights and social science intern. The BLS sociologist profile explains the professional research occupation; it is not a statement that undergraduate internships require or confer the same qualifications.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
History students can make a strong case through source evaluation, synthesis and clear writing. Archives, museums, public programs, research organizations and publishing use those skills differently. A useful internship need not have historian in its title. Show that you can distinguish a contemporary record from a later interpretation, track provenance and explain uncertainty without losing the reader’s question.
