Decide which role you are applying for

Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Specialized UX research internships may require graduate enrollment even when design internships do not. Check the posting. A polished interface does not by itself demonstrate user research, and a survey does not automatically establish why users behave as they do.

Application decision: Role routes · What to use: User experience, interaction design and product research; Social research, user insight and evaluation; Visual communication and graphic design; Business analytics and decision support

Application decision: Relevant coursework · What to use: interaction design, research methods, usability, statistics and prototyping.

Build this work sample

Study a narrow user task with appropriate permission and a small, clearly described sample. Identify a usability problem, compare two design responses and test the revised flow. Include an error state and an accessibility consideration. Explain the limits of the sample and avoid turning a few observations into population-wide performance claims.

A test that makes the sample credible

Write a task that a participant can either complete or fail, then inspect the point of failure. Do not substitute preference for observed task performance. Use a low-risk, consented exercise or a documented expert review, and show how the evidence changes the proposed interface.

This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

User experience, interaction design and product research

User experience work can involve research, interaction design, information architecture, usability testing or interface implementation. Search UX design intern, product design intern, interaction design, UX research and accessibility, then examine the duties. The BLS web development and digital design profile provides adjacent occupational context; specialized UX research internships may have their own degree requirements.

Social research, user insight and evaluation

Social research skills can support evaluation, customer insight, community research and organizational studies. Search research assistant, qualitative research, evaluation, insights and social science intern. The BLS sociologist profile explains the professional research occupation; it is not a statement that undergraduate internships require or confer the same qualifications.

Visual communication and graphic design

Graphic design internships may focus on identity systems, marketing assets, publication design, digital production or internal communication. Search graphic design intern, visual design, brand design and production design. The BLS graphic designer profile describes the occupation; the employer’s portfolio expectations and tool requirements are specific to the role.

Business analytics and decision support

Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.

Background

Human-Computer Interaction can lead toward design, research, accessibility or product analysis. These paths share an interest in users but require different evidence. A research application should show methods and interpretation; a design application should show task flows, alternatives and implementation considerations. Be explicit about whether you designed, tested, analyzed or built the work in your portfolio.
