Decide which role you are applying for

Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Computational linguistics and NLP research can require graduate or advanced technical preparation. Localization may require professional language proficiency. Do not treat speaking a language, studying its structure and translating specialized material as equivalent capabilities.

Application decision: Role routes · What to use: Writing, editing and communications; Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling; User experience, interaction design and product research; Software development, testing and technical implementation

Application decision: Relevant coursework · What to use: linguistic analysis, research methods, statistics, language documentation and programming where relevant.

Application decision: Employer entry points · What to use: Library of Congress student internships; Google student opportunities

Build this work sample

Build a small, rights-cleared text-analysis or annotation project. Define categories, document ambiguous cases and compare two annotation approaches. Report disagreement instead of forcing every example into a confident label. For a computational version, compare a simple baseline with a model and examine errors by category without inferring sensitive personal attributes.

A test that makes the sample credible

Give a second reader the annotation rules and record where the labels disagree. Revise the rules without erasing the disagreement from the report. For a computational extension, inspect errors by category; do not treat language patterns as evidence of sensitive personal traits.

This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Writing, editing and communications

Writing and communications internships can involve editorial research, technical explanation, internal communication, copywriting or content operations. Search editorial intern, communications intern, content strategy, technical writing and copywriting separately. The BLS writers and authors profile supplies occupational background; a portfolio and the employer’s actual work often matter more than the broad title.

Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling

Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.

User experience, interaction design and product research

User experience work can involve research, interaction design, information architecture, usability testing or interface implementation. Search UX design intern, product design intern, interaction design, UX research and accessibility, then examine the duties. The BLS web development and digital design profile provides adjacent occupational context; specialized UX research internships may have their own degree requirements.

Software development, testing and technical implementation

Software internships can involve product features, internal tools, test automation, integrations or infrastructure. Search beyond the largest consumer platforms: employers in manufacturing, finance, healthcare and retail also maintain software teams. The BLS software development and quality assurance profile describes these occupational functions, not a single standardized internship curriculum.

Application and offer checks

Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.

Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.

Background

Linguistics can support language research, localization, communication and computational work, but the route depends heavily on complementary skills. A theoretical linguistics course and a production language-data pipeline are different preparation. Show how you analyze ambiguity, define annotation categories and test consistency. For technical roles, make the coding and data work visible rather than assuming the degree signals it.
