Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Many research internships specify graduate enrollment or a publication record; do not assume the major title satisfies those requirements. Search applied data and engineering routes as well. Report experiments honestly, including unsuccessful runs and limits on generalization.

Build this work sample
Choose a public prediction task and build a simple baseline before one more complex method. Separate development from final evaluation, check leakage and investigate errors. Test sensitivity to a data shift or missing feature. Explain whether the improvement is practically meaningful and what additional work would be needed before the model could support a real decision.
A test that makes the sample credible
Freeze the evaluation set before choosing the preferred configuration. Add a distribution shift or a harder subgroup and describe the failure. Show the baseline, training record and error analysis together; the contribution should be an experiment that can be inspected, not an unexplained model name.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.
Read the work behind the title
Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.
Software development, testing and technical implementation
Software internships can involve product features, internal tools, test automation, integrations or infrastructure. Search beyond the largest consumer platforms: employers in manufacturing, finance, healthcare and retail also maintain software teams. The BLS software development and quality assurance profile describes these occupational functions, not a single standardized internship curriculum.
Business analytics and decision support
Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.
Physical science, simulation and quantitative research
Physics and quantitative research internships span computation, instrumentation, experimental support and domain-specific analysis. Search research assistant, simulation, scientific computing, test engineering and the particular subject area, not only “physicist intern.” The BLS physicist and astronomer profile describes occupations that often involve advanced study; that should not be confused with the requirements for every supervised undergraduate research placement.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Machine Learning students should make their evaluation discipline visible. Applied modeling, ML engineering, experimentation and research are different routes. The strongest undergraduate portfolio explains the data, baseline, errors and deployment assumptions rather than only the architecture. A smaller model with a defensible test can demonstrate more judgment than a large model trained without a clear question.
