Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Product management and technology strategy internships may demand evidence beyond coursework. Implementation and business-systems positions can be more direct entry routes. Check whether an IT role is support, infrastructure, application configuration or analysis before choosing your work sample.

Build this work sample
Design a small purchasing workflow. Specify who can request, approve and receive an order, define the data model, and create acceptance tests for exceptions such as a rejected request or duplicate invoice. Build a prototype only after the requirements are clear. Include a migration check showing how you would detect lost or duplicated records when moving between systems.
A test that makes the sample credible
Test a request approved by the wrong person, an invoice submitted twice and an order received only in part. Write the expected outcome before running the prototype. The useful deliverable is a requirements-to-test matrix: another student should be able to reproduce a failed case without asking what you intended.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Information systems and enterprise technology
Information systems work connects a business process with the software and data needed to run it. This can include requirements, enterprise application configuration, implementation testing and reporting. Search systems analyst, business systems, enterprise applications, implementation and IT analyst internships. The BLS computer systems analyst profile explains the bridge between organizational needs and technical systems.
Business analytics and decision support
Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.
Software development, testing and technical implementation
Software internships can involve product features, internal tools, test automation, integrations or infrastructure. Search beyond the largest consumer platforms: employers in manufacturing, finance, healthcare and retail also maintain software teams. The BLS software development and quality assurance profile describes these occupational functions, not a single standardized internship curriculum.
Cybersecurity, controls and defensive analysis
Security work is not limited to penetration testing. Defensive monitoring, identity and access management, governance, incident documentation and security engineering are distinct routes. Search security analyst intern, security operations, identity, technology risk and security assurance. The BLS information security analyst profile is occupational context; some internships require prior systems knowledge even when they accept undergraduates.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Management Information Systems can lead to implementation, business systems, technology consulting, analytics and some software routes. Its distinguishing opportunity is to connect technical decisions with how an organization actually operates. Do not position the degree merely as a less technical version of computer science. Instead, demonstrate the ability to translate a business requirement into data, permissions, workflow and tests. A role’s duties matter more than whether its title says IT, analyst or product.
