Build this work sample
Implement a mathematical method on a small, understandable problem. Compare it with a baseline, test an edge case and explain the assumptions that make it valid. A simulation, optimization exercise or statistical analysis can work. Write a short explanation for a reader who has not taken the same advanced courses, without hiding the important limitation.
A test that makes the sample credible
Choose a problem with a clear definition of correctness and provide a worked counterexample to an initially tempting approach. Then show how the revised method handles it. The exercise should demonstrate proof, computation or modeling judgment rather than relying on the degree title to imply quantitative strength.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.
Business analytics and decision support
Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.
Actuarial, pricing and insurance analytics
Actuarial work applies probability, financial reasoning and data analysis to uncertain future costs. Pricing, reserving, retirement and risk work do not use identical datasets or business questions. Search actuarial intern as well as pricing analyst, risk analyst and insurance analytics, then check whether the posting specifies exams or particular coursework. The BLS actuary profile describes the occupation and its examination-based development; it does not establish a universal exam threshold for interns.
Software development, testing and technical implementation
Software internships can involve product features, internal tools, test automation, integrations or infrastructure. Search beyond the largest consumer platforms: employers in manufacturing, finance, healthcare and retail also maintain software teams. The BLS software development and quality assurance profile describes these occupational functions, not a single standardized internship curriculum.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Mathematics students often have strong reasoning skills but need to make their practical application visible. Analytics, actuarial work, software, operations research and research assistance are routes to investigate. You do not need to abandon theoretical interests; you do need a work sample that shows how you move from a formal idea to a result another person can use. Choose one technical tool and one application domain rather than trying to learn everything at once.
