Decide which role you are applying for
Application decision: Important distinction · What to use: Eligibility may depend on completed semesters, skills validation, student status and jurisdiction-specific rules. An undergraduate nursing major does not authorize independent practice. Confirm supervision, permitted tasks and academic recognition directly with both the school and employer.
Application decision: Role routes · What to use: Nursing student placements and supervised clinical learning; Health administration and healthcare operations; Public health, prevention and program evaluation; Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Application decision: Relevant coursework · What to use: nursing fundamentals, supervised clinical practice, health assessment and evidence appraisal.
Application decision: Employer entry points · What to use: UnitedHealth Group early careers; Walmart healthcare student programs
Build this work sample
Create an evidence-appraisal brief on a patient-education or care-process question using published sources. Explain the intended audience, summarize the limits of the evidence and draft material for review by a qualified supervisor. Alternatively, use synthetic operational data to examine a handoff process. Do not present the output as patient-specific advice or an approved clinical protocol.
A test that makes the sample credible
For a nonclinical sample, document an administrative or educational problem and its escalation boundary. Do not invent patient encounters or independent care responsibilities. Show what a supervisor would need to review before using the output, and keep patient-identifiable information out of the portfolio.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Nursing student placements and supervised clinical learning
Nursing students should distinguish nurse externships, student nurse employment, clinical placements and nonclinical research or quality projects. Eligibility may depend on the nursing program, completed coursework, credentials and the placement provider. The BLS registered nurse profile describes professional nursing and licensure; it does not authorize a student to perform a particular clinical task.
Health administration and healthcare operations
Healthcare operations includes scheduling, patient access, supply coordination, reporting, quality improvement and administrative processes. It is distinct from clinical practice. Search healthcare administration intern, health operations, patient access analytics, quality improvement and health services research. The BLS health services manager profile is background on organizational responsibilities, not evidence that an undergraduate intern manages clinical services.
Public health, prevention and program evaluation
Public health work can involve surveillance support, community programs, health communication, research operations and evaluation. Undergraduate routes are not identical to the professional occupation of epidemiologist. The BLS epidemiologist profile is useful for understanding the analytical work and advanced-training pathway, but students should search public health intern, program evaluation, community health and research assistant as well.
Data science, experimentation and statistical modeling
Data science combines data preparation, statistical reasoning and model evaluation. The title covers work with very different levels of research depth, so distinguish applied undergraduate roles from internships explicitly designed for graduate researchers. The BLS data scientist profile explains the occupation; an employer’s degree and coursework requirements still control eligibility.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Nursing students need to distinguish school-arranged clinical education, student nurse employment, externships and nonclinical internships. The title alone does not establish what you may do or whether the hours count toward your degree. Start with your school’s requirements and the employer’s written student-role description. Useful options can include supervised clinical exposure, quality support and public-health work, but each serves a different learning purpose.
