Build this work sample

Compare two policy proposals addressing the same problem. Identify the implementing institution, affected groups, administrative requirements and evidence needed to evaluate results. Separate enacted rules from proposals and date every legal or policy claim. Write a two-page memo that presents the strongest objection to your recommendation rather than omitting it.

A test that makes the sample credible

Define the policy question before selecting statistics that appear persuasive. Write the strongest competing interpretation and identify the evidence needed to evaluate it. A useful brief distinguishes political preferences from empirical claims and does not pretend that desk research establishes public consent.

This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Public policy, government and regulatory research

Policy internships can involve legislative research, program analysis, stakeholder correspondence, public records and administrative work. The employer might be a public agency, legislative office, research organization or a company’s policy team. The BLS political scientist profile describes a research occupation that often requires advanced study; undergraduate policy internships are a separate route and should be evaluated on their own requirements.

Business analytics and decision support

Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.

Public relations and stakeholder communication

Public relations work concerns how an organization communicates with external audiences and responds to questions or scrutiny. It differs from buying advertising or simply posting on social media. Search public relations intern, corporate communications, public affairs, media relations and communications agency. The BLS public relations specialist profile provides occupational context for these responsibilities.

Legal operations, compliance support and document research

Undergraduate legal-related work can include document organization, legal operations, compliance research and administrative support. It is not equivalent to practicing law or to a law-student summer associate position. Search legal intern with degree filters, legal operations, compliance intern, paralegal assistant and regulatory affairs support. The BLS paralegal and legal assistant profile provides context for supervised support work.

Background

Political Science is useful beyond campaigns when you can investigate institutions and explain evidence clearly. Policy research, public affairs, program analysis and legal support are separate routes. Choose an issue you can research fairly, including evidence that complicates your preferred interpretation. An employer-facing writing sample should be shorter and more decision-focused than most course papers. Show the question, source quality and practical implications rather than assuming enthusiasm for politics is enough.
