Build this work sample

Prepare an implementation memo for a hypothetical local program. State the objective, responsible institution, eligibility process, operating costs and possible unintended effects. Design a small evaluation with a credible baseline and explain what it would not prove. Use public information, clearly distinguishing policy analysis from legal advice.

A test that makes the sample credible

Compare two policy alternatives against the same objective and constraints. Identify who bears a cost that an average outcome hides. Conclude with the remaining evidence needed for a decision, rather than presenting a preferred policy as inevitable because one metric improved.

This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Public policy, government and regulatory research

Policy internships can involve legislative research, program analysis, stakeholder correspondence, public records and administrative work. The employer might be a public agency, legislative office, research organization or a company’s policy team. The BLS political scientist profile describes a research occupation that often requires advanced study; undergraduate policy internships are a separate route and should be evaluated on their own requirements.

Business analytics and decision support

Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.

Operations improvement and service delivery

Operations work concerns the movement of work through a real system: orders, people, machines, cases or appointments. Search operations intern, process improvement, service operations, continuous improvement and planning analyst. The BLS operations research guide describes one analytical route; many practical operations internships rely more on observation, spreadsheet analysis and implementation than on advanced optimization.

Public health, prevention and program evaluation

Public health work can involve surveillance support, community programs, health communication, research operations and evaluation. Undergraduate routes are not identical to the professional occupation of epidemiologist. The BLS epidemiologist profile is useful for understanding the analytical work and advanced-training pathway, but students should search public health intern, program evaluation, community health and research assistant as well.

Application and offer checks

Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.

Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.

Background

Public Policy internships reward the ability to connect a proposal with implementation. Research, evaluation, legislative support and program operations expose different parts of that process. Ask whether the role is mainly analytical, administrative or public-facing. Strong work does not stop at describing a problem; it identifies who can act, what resources are needed and what evidence would show whether the action worked.
