Build this work sample

Design an assortment for a fictional retailer with a fixed purchasing budget. Estimate demand by item, choose initial quantities and set a markdown trigger. Introduce a slow-selling product and a stockout in another. Explain whether you would transfer inventory, reorder, discount or change the assortment, including the limitations of the demand estimate.

A test that makes the sample credible

Introduce markdowns and stockouts into the assortment case. A product with a high initial margin may produce a poor result after unsold stock is cleared. Reconcile units purchased, sold and remaining, then defend one allocation change using both margin and availability.

Marketing, consumer research and growth analysis

Marketing internships differ sharply between market research, brand work, performance channels, lifecycle communication and sales support. Search the function, not just “marketing.” The BLS market research analyst profile provides background on understanding customers and evaluating markets, but does not imply that every marketing position is an analytical research role.

Supply chain, procurement and logistics

Supply chain work includes sourcing inputs, planning inventory, moving goods and coordinating suppliers. Procurement is not the same as warehouse operations, and demand planning is not the same as transportation. Search procurement intern, supply planning, demand planning, logistics analyst and distribution operations separately. The BLS logistician profile explains the broader lifecycle of moving and supplying products.

Business analytics and decision support

Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.

Operations improvement and service delivery

Operations work concerns the movement of work through a real system: orders, people, machines, cases or appointments. Search operations intern, process improvement, service operations, continuous improvement and planning analyst. The BLS operations research guide describes one analytical route; many practical operations internships rely more on observation, spreadsheet analysis and implementation than on advanced optimization.

Background

Retail and Merchandising sits where customer demand meets assortment, inventory and margin. Buying, allocation, planning, category analysis and store operations should be searched separately. A useful candidate understands that a product can sell well while tying up too much cash or generating costly markdowns. Show how you connect customer insight with an operating decision rather than treating merchandising as personal taste.
