Build this work sample
Build a fictional risk register for a regional manufacturer. Separate property, liability, operational and financial exposures. For each, identify an observable indicator, an existing control and a plausible loss scenario. Explain which risks might be reduced operationally and which might be addressed through insurance or another financial arrangement. Do not pretend to quote real coverage or premiums.
A test that makes the sample credible
Take the largest proposed loss and trace the assumptions behind it. Change the frequency separately from the severity. Your risk register should show an owner and a detection method, not just a color rating. Leave actual policy interpretation and pricing outside the exercise rather than presenting invented terms as an insurance quote.
This is an editorial preparation exercise, not an employer assessment or a claim that a program assigns this work.

Underwriting, claims and risk services
Insurance underwriting evaluates which risks to accept and on what terms; claims work investigates and resolves losses after an insured event. Brokerage, carrier operations and actuarial analysis are adjacent but different. Search underwriting intern, claims intern, risk control, insurance operations and brokerage internship as separate routes. The BLS underwriting guide supplies occupational background; it should not be read as a promise that students make independent coverage decisions.
Actuarial, pricing and insurance analytics
Actuarial work applies probability, financial reasoning and data analysis to uncertain future costs. Pricing, reserving, retirement and risk work do not use identical datasets or business questions. Search actuarial intern as well as pricing analyst, risk analyst and insurance analytics, then check whether the posting specifies exams or particular coursework. The BLS actuary profile describes the occupation and its examination-based development; it does not establish a universal exam threshold for interns.
Credit, lending and borrower analysis
Credit work starts with repayment, not just growth. A borrower can report rising sales while losing the liquidity needed to service debt. Relevant searches include commercial banking, credit analyst, underwriting analyst, portfolio management and lending operations internships. The BLS lending profile provides context for borrower evaluation and the lending process; the specific internship posting determines the work and qualifications.
Business analytics and decision support
Business analytics is useful when it changes a decision. That can mean investigating a decline in conversion, estimating a capacity constraint or reconciling two reporting systems before a manager acts. Search business analyst, operations analyst, decision science, business intelligence and analytics intern. The BLS operations research profile describes a more mathematical neighboring occupation; not every business analytics internship requires optimization or advanced modeling.
Application and offer checks
Read the actual duties and entry conditions before choosing which version of this project to submit. For the routes above, use the posting to confirm the degree level, return-to-study rule, work location and dates. The linked program pages are starting points, not verified 2027 vacancies.
Compare the stated pay unit, paid weeks, location, transport and housing support. No current internship pay range is established here; occupational median wages are not intern pay. Confirm supervision and any school-credit requirements before accepting.
Background
Risk Management and Insurance offers a clearer functional route than many broad business degrees, but you still need to distinguish underwriting, claims, brokerage, enterprise risk and actuarial analytics. The degree can help you understand how risk is identified and transferred; the internship should show how a team evaluates evidence and makes a supervised decision. An insurance company’s investment team is not the same as its underwriting organization, and insurance sales is not the same as analytical risk work.
